Chavez: Media Literacy is Crucial for America's Future – Daily Utah Chronicle
Media literacy has always been a concern for educators and activists, but with the explosion of social media and online journalism in recent decades, the ability to evaluate what you are reading is crucial to being an informed citizen. With a president who has lied to the American people over 12,000 times and claims that any criticism pointed in his direction is “fake news,” it is more important than ever that we emphasize critical thinking in our daily lives.

Chavez: Romney's Teeter-totter on Trump Should Bounce Back Toward Impeachment – Daily Utah Chronicle
It’s very disappointing to watch a leader who once stood with so much conviction — specifically speaking out against someone they see as unsafe for our country — later walk back on those values for political gain. Utah Sen. Mitt Romney vocally criticized then-candidate Trump during the 2016 election. Doing so made him appear to be a stalwart voice of reason within the Republican Party.

Chavez: Seeking Help for Mental Health Should Be as Normal as Treating Physical Injuries – Daily Utah Chronicle
Just as it is not looked down upon to visit your physician for a check-up, stitches or antibiotics, seeing a mental health professional should also be considered a normal, acceptable behavior. In theory, this view of mental health — that areas of the mind can be broken just as parts of the body can be — seems easy to accept. In reality, there are still a lot of stigmas attached to seeking help with mental health, especially when it comes to seeing a therapist.
Chavez: In Defense of Crying – Daily Utah Chronicle
Growing up, I didn’t cry much. Like many others, I felt that it signaled weakness. I was raised within a patriarchal family structure, and the only person I knew who cried was my mother. I noticed that her emotions were often questioned and invalidated by others. She felt intense shame for experiencing symptoms of stress and mental illness, which only made those exact symptoms worse. The male figures in my life did not cry.
