Just weeks into being director general of the Intellectual Property of the Philippines (IPOPHL), Atty. Rowel Barba found himself weathering more storms than any of his predecessors. Having been in public service before he took on the role, however, he knew exactly how to be a strong pillar not only for IPOPHL, but also for his family and personal life, when the coronavirus pandemic hit. Atty.

A personal end of the year list of sorts
This year has been a crazy one for Manila, with a lot of closures, a resurgence of imports and trends like milk tea and KBBQ dominating the culinary scene. I’ve tried my best to collate what I’ve loved about eating in the city into a highly personal list that I can only hope you’ll use when thinking about where to dine and what to eat. A lot of Manila’s highly-applauded chefs stepped up their game this year and many opened concepts that ranged from high to low Szechuan Hotpot at Xialongkan.
Where to find the best desserts for Christmas
COOKIES from Baker’s on East. Christmas is just a few weeks away, so it’s about that time to get everyone you know a great gift. Food seems to always be a great option, but it’s hard to sift through all the stuff available online to find one that is actually delicious, and that people will actually enjoy. Luckily enough, I’ve tried and tested enough goods this year to give you a succinct list that is full of treasures, so you don’t need to order the bad in order to get to the good stuff.
A hairy crab experience
HONG KONG — I always miss hairy crab season. The mitten crab, famed for its flavor has always eluded me, and I’ve never had a chance to experience the crustacean that is seemingly beloved by all those who have tried it. So, this long weekend, on a quick trip to Macau and Hong Kong, I knew that the slightly colder weather meant that these hairy things would pop up on restaurant menus across the cities, and it was a chance to finally partake of the popular seafood’s flesh.
Back to the Borough
Several years ago, Borough, then located in the Podium, was a game-changer: A 24/7 restaurant inside a mall that served comfort food favorites that were far, far from the other all-day offerings late-night citizens were used to. It enjoyed a longer lifespan than most establishments have these days, but its closure still stung for all its loyal patrons. I enjoyed several meals there–often less sober than I admit, but I vow that the food was always satisfying.
Asia’s best chefs at Toyo
Toyo Eatery is the Filipino culinary world’s darling. Husband-and-wife team, Jordy and May Navarra, created a space that has engendered so much buzz–totally warranted–both here and abroad. This means everyone wants to work with them, which leads us to Salu-Salo, a partnership with the popular restaurant, Nespresso and The Peninsula Manila. Over the next few months, some of Asia’s best chefs will be cooking at Toyo in pop-up, four-hand dinners that will guarantee showcases of stunning food.
One of Manila’s Best Japanese Restaurants
With all the new restaurants opening up in Manila, it is so easy to be blinded by the flashy and trendy. But seriously, why place all your bets on untested places where the likelihood of good service and great food decreases? I have my staples for certain cuisines, and my default Japanese restaurants are often in Makati, with the exception of a few in the South. Hanakazu, in particular, is phenomenal—a gem that is as good or better than any restaurant of its kind in the Metro.
New bars in Poblacion
“Poblacion’s new bars are a sophisticated bunch. The area has become the place to go to, eclipsing other food villages like Salcedo, Legazpi and Maginhawa. Its cool factor is actually balanced by restaurants that are very serious in what they do, and can challenge those of similar quality, but at a price cheaper than other places in Makati or BGC.
The Curator Wins Big at the Inaugural Asia's 50 Best Bars
The prestigious group behind World’s 50 Best Restaurants recently launched the first regional list of The World’s 50 Best Bars brand, with an event at The Capitol Theatre last night. The launch saw one of our local bars recognized as one of Asia’s best, coming in at number 25. The Curator, since its conception, has been one of the pioneers of the cocktail industry in Manila, with an ever-evolving menu of cocktails mapped out by flavor notes on a spiderweb.
Must-Have Eats for Pinoy Holidays
We Filipinos love celebrating our holidays—and the food that comes with it. It’s become tradition for us to create feasts, from simple to lavish, to bring our families together, no matter what the occasion, but there are certain seasons where we celebrate that little bit more. Especially for Filipinos living broad, having a taste of homegrown cuisine from time to time can definitely ease the pangs for home. Here are just a few of our special holidays, and the culinary traditions that come with it.
