Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I interned for Travelxp even before I got into college. That was my first job as a journalist.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I haven't, but Father Christmas knows that that's exactly what I ask for every year :)
How is social media changing news?
Social media is a tangible version of what was earlier known as the "grapevine". News travels faster than light, thus increasing accessibility
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Grammarly is my best friend. Google Docs is my home.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram. I like to repost news stories with my opinion or witty one-liners. It's a good platform to integrate short text with visuals.
Why did you become a journalist?
I'm a storyteller. I love the way words make me feel. It was my love of language put together with my desire to be a known voice in the world
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
There was no school newspaper at first. I had to start one myself. I was the chief editor and was also in-charge of the design and layout.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A short piece I wrote for the college newspaper-making assignment was "Why does Billy have a gun?". It was about the gun situation in America
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
As my media and cultural studies professor always says, "Read indiscriminately"
What's your favorite drink?
Virgin Mojito for the win!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
If I'm at home, I'm with my dog and with the family. If I'm in college, I'm usually discussing the latest happenings with people old and new
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Swaddle is one of my favorite digital publications
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Travel, culture and lifestyle journalism is not mere creative writing! It takes effort to write about a place with a narrative woven into it.
