Provincialising Patriarchy: Methodological Interventions in Geography
1 Introduction Currently, there has been an unfortunate regression in gender and racial politics that has led many in the global North to ask how could this be happening ‘here’? ‘Here’, the global North, is considered as the site of modernity and commitment to gender equality, even if it is not always attained. ‘Here’ is implicitly juxtaposed to elsewhere (the global South), the assumed site of regressive politics, especially gender politics.
Unruly Modernity: Reconciling Modernity and Decolonisation in Migration Theory
1 Introduction Although the growth in migrant numbers has been accompanied by a large and growing body of empirical (Pisarevskaya et al. 2020) and policy related migration research (IOM 2021), migration remains ‘a surprisingly under-theorised field of social inquiry’ (de Haas 2021: 1). Cognisant of the complexities of migration and the inadequacies of current concepts migration scholars have called for renewed focus and effort into theorising migration and have made great strides in this field.
Reversing the Gaze: Gendered Experiences of Migrants in the UK IT Sector
1 Introduction Migration research on skilled migrant women has highlighted the deskilling they face, whether they move as accompanying partners, as labour migrants or as refugees or students who move into work. This research has been underpinned by policy concerns about the loss of human capital due to deskilling and by feminist concerns about the extent to which deskilling is a phenomenon particularly experienced by women.
Exploring homeplace as a nexus of learning and socially reproductive labour: A feminist perspective on internationalisation at a distance
INTRODUCTION There is a growing recognition of internationalisation at a distance (IaD) as an emerging and potent strategy for broadening the international reach of higher education (Ramanau, 2016). Mittelmeier et al.
The Future of The Geographical Journal: Engaging with Public Issues
These are unprecedented times of prominent structural changes and uncertainties as societies, economies, cultures, and human-environment relations adapt and reconfigure in various ways. The global pandemic has brought us to a place of urgency and reflection that exposes and has intensified longer-term concerns about the climate emergency, rising levels of economic austerity, altered geopolitical alliances, and infrastructural changes including those driven by technology and science.
Distance education as socio‐material assemblage: Place, distribution, and aggregation
Abstract This paper outlines some of the material assemblages that are formed in international distance education (DE) in Africa. It offers a first exploratory study of materialities in DE and how they potentially distribute and aggregate to form a network to provide education. Through the use of interviews, students lived experiences are explored to unpack the multiplicity of networks needed to overcome the de‐aggregated and distributed institution.
Conceptualizing Internationalization at a Distance: A “Third Category” of University Internationalization
Introducing Internationalization Abroad and Internationalization at Home “Comprehensive internationalization” outlines the complex and individualized approaches taken by institutions to integrate global or international elements across their teaching, research, and service deliveries (Hudzik, 2011).
