Historical tree phenology data across contrasting sites in the Congo Basin - Scientific Data
Abstract We present a unique dataset of historical tropical tree phenology observations at two sites from different bioclimatic regions across the Congo Basin. We cover both the Atlantic Mayombe forest and the tropical forest in the central Congo Basin. To our knowledge this is the complete extant historical (1937–1957) phenology data across the Congo basin.

The global biogeography of tree leaf form and habit - Nature Plants
|
Abstract Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees.

Co-limitation towards lower latitudes shapes global forest diversity gradients - Nature Ecology & Evolution
|
Abstract The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is one of the most recognized global patterns of species richness exhibited across a wide range of taxa. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed in the past two centuries to explain LDG, but rigorous tests of the drivers of LDGs have been limited by a lack of high-quality global species richness data.

Increasing calcium scarcity along Afrotropical forest succession - Nature Ecology & Evolution
Abstract Secondary forests constitute an increasingly important component of tropical forests worldwide. Although cycling of essential nutrients affects recovery trajectories of secondary forests, the effect of nutrient limitation on forest regrowth is poorly constrained. Here we use three lines of evidence from secondary forest succession sequences in central Africa to identify potential nutrient limitation in regrowing forests.

Mobilization of aged and biolabile soil carbon by tropical deforestation
Abstract In the mostly pristine Congo Basin, agricultural land-use change has intensified in recent years. One potential and understudied consequence of this deforestation and conversion to agriculture is the mobilization and loss of organic matter from soils to rivers as dissolved organic matter. Here, we quantify and characterize dissolved organic matter sampled from 19 catchments of varying deforestation extent near Lake Kivu over a two-week period during the wet season.
Isotope Fractionation in Biogas Allows Direct Microbial Community Stability Monitoring in Anaerobic Digestion
Process monitoring of anaerobic digestion is typically based on operational parameters, such as pH and volatile fatty acid concentration, that are lagging on actual microbial community performance. In this study, 13C isotope fractionation in CH and CO in the biogas was used to monitor process stability of anaerobic digestion in response to salt stress. A gradual and pulsed increase in salt concentration resulted in a decrease in methane production.
