Immerse is Seeking an Engagement Editor!
Immerse is a publication based on Medium designed to spark creative dialogue around emerging forms of nonfiction media, produced in partnership with the MIT Open Documentary Lab. Over the past few years we’ve published articles exploring topics ranging from the ethics of VR, to the role of AI in storytelling, to the ways in which speculative fiction can help point towards more positive futures.
Building on Experience
PHI founder and director Phoebe Greenberg describes the challenges of presenting community-based new media during a global pandemic By Phoebe Greenberg in collaboration with Andrew Gray [en français] As founder and director of PHI — a Montréal-based organization consisting of three separate but complementary entities, the PHI Centre, the PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art and the PHI Studio — I am delighted to introduce our series of articles presented in collaboration with Immerse.

AI Platforms for Interactive Storytellers: New and Improved Tools
At the beginning of 2018, I curated a list of five accessible tools aimed at anyone with basic Python scripting abilities for Docubase. I was a beginner in the field of machine learning and overwhelmed by its complexity. Machine learning can be a fantastic tool for creators, but integrating AI into your workflow is a challenge for those who don’t have much coding experience.
Making a New Reality Toolkit Provides Resources for Boosting Equity in Emerging Media
Kamal Sinclair conducted more than 100 interviews for Making a New Reality, a series Immerse published in2017–2018. Now, two years later, we are thrilled to launch a new toolkit based on her important work. With Making a New Reality: A Toolkit for Inclusive Media Futures, Jessica Clark and Carrie McLaren have updated and supplemented Sinclair’s original research with recommendations and resources to help readers further diversity, equity, and inclusion in emerging media.

Inverse Surveillance Project
Meet the new Co-Creation Journalism Fellow When she finally won her Freedom of Information Act requests in court, filmmaker Assia Boundaoui was granted access to tens of thousands of pages of FBI documentation from years of secret surveillance of her community. “I had won. But I was still looking at thousands of pages of FBI documents full of black holes,” she said.
Say What?
“You hear me, but you are not listening.” As the words came out of my mouth, I realized that I sounded like some version of my parents. My kids truly were not paying any attention to what I was saying. I received the teenage nods and maybe a grunt of acknowledgment, but I might as well have told them I was headed to Mars. The scary thing is that I love my kids more than anything, and what I am trying to convey to them – most of the time – is the kind of counsel that will help them be successful.

Insane Honesty
Brands traditionally hit on the pros of their products, attempting to sweep under the rug any possible issues. Let’s face it – it’s hard to admit our weaknesses, one might even say gut-wrenching. How can you divulge the flaws of the products and/or services you hope to sell? But heres’ the thing – it can be a powerful marketing tool. In fact, today it may be the only marketing tool worth keeping in your box.
Consumers’ New Reality
You walk into a retail store, and you’re drawn to a black shirt that’s a little different than your current style. But you like it. You like it a lot, actually, and you think about buying it. Unfortunately, you promised yourself you wouldn’t buy any more black — your closet looks like the Grim Reaper resides there. You don’t see the shirt hanging in any other colors and almost turn away from the rack until a 6-by-6-inch sign catches your eye. It’s an image and the name of that shirt you like a lot.
