Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Sports reporter - Daily Vidette at Illinois State University.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! Though never to file an actual story.
How is social media changing news?
It's amazing how everyone now wants to be the first to report the story, sometimes at the expense of accuracy.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Gary Larson, hands down!
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Everything. The responsibility we have to deliver the news in an accurate, concise manner is one that I take personally.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
not funny, but #alonetogether during the start of the pandemic was nice.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I generally like to seek out the story myself, to be honest.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
My Brain, computer, and whatever I can write notes down on. :)
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook, but Twitter is growing on me!
Who do you wish followed you?
People who are unable to use social media (Abraham Lincoln comes to mind.)
Why did you become a journalist?
Because of my passion for writing, reporting, and retelling the story to interested readers.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did not, believe it or not! I didn't discover journalism until high school.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My first in-depth article was on the resurgence of the women's basketball team at Illinois State, and it was very rewarding.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Never give up! I once thought this dream of mine was long gone, until I found the right opportunity.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Evening - I'm a night owl, through and through. I do my best deadline writing after dark.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
The pink baseball bats used during Mother's Day Weekend in MLB games. Had a lot of fun with that article.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I can't recall ever getting a bad pitch.
What's your favorite drink?
Pepsi. Plain ol Pepsi.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
With my family.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I truly enjoy reading The Athletic.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That it's glamorous. It is incredibly rewarding work, but certainly not glamorous.
