America's EV downturn hides a silver lining: charging is quietly getting better
Electric-vehicle sales in the U.S. are down by half compared with last year. The EV charging industry evidently didn't get the memo. Charging companies in the U.S. are on track to install about as many public EV plugs this year as in 2025, the industry's record high.
Rivian sales rise as new EV model is launched
Startup automaker Rivian narrowed its losses and reported an uptick in electric-vehicle sales and revenue in the second quarter, a rare bit of good news for the troubled EV space in the U.S. Rivian said it now hopes to sell more EVs this year than previously expected, a likely sign of early momentum for its newest model, the R2 SUV. Rivian delivered 12,194 EVs, up from 10,365 in the first quarter.

Honda will stop selling its lone electric vehicle in the US
Patrick George Honda Motor will end production this year of the lone electric vehicle it sells in the U.S., the latest retrenchment for battery-powered cars in the American market. The 2026 model year will be the last for Honda's Prologue SUV, said Lance Woelfer, the vice president of automobile sales for American Honda Motor Co. The company isn't canceling sales immediately, but will instead finish selling off about 100,000 before the model comes to an end.
Honda's never faced a crisis like this—and a comeback won't be easy
Patrick George, Sean McLain Honda Motor managed to stay profitable through a global financial meltdown, natural disasters , a safety crisis and the pandemic. Then came America's electric-vehicle whiplash . The Japanese company, the fifth-largest automaker in the U.S. by sales, is confronting some of the steepest challenges it has faced in its nearly seven decades as a public company. U.S. tariffs have squeezed profits in its biggest market. Chinese upstarts provide a new threat.
Rivian's Illinois factory will run on recycled EV batteries
Patrick George Electric-vehicle startup Rivian has found an unusual power source for its Illinois car factory: old batteries from its own cars. Rivian is joining with Redwood Materials to reuse EV batteries for energy storage—the largest repurposed-battery energy storage system for an automotive manufacturer in the U.S., executives told The Wall Street Journal. Redwood Materials is a battery-recycling firm started by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel.
After the great EV slowdown, high gas prices are tempting Americans back
Christopher Otts, Patrick George Skyrocketing gas prices cemented Eric Janney's decision in March to go electric for good. The IT worker in Aliquippa, Pa., bought a lightly used Kia EV6, after trying the same vehicle on a cheap lease for the past couple of years. “Knowing that we can go out and do what we need to do at any time and not have to worry about how much we're gonna be able to put fuel in the tank has been incredibly beneficial,” said Janney, 43, whose wife is a homemaker.
Rivian's make-or-break car arrives at the worst possible moment for EVs
Patrick George RJ Scaringe has been selling his boxy, off-road-ready Rivian SUVs and trucks to well-heeled electric vehicle fans for the past few years. Now, his company, Rivian Automotive, is trying to do what few other automakers have been able to pull off: go from a niche startup to a mainstream car brand. Its survival rides on the outcome. “The phrase ‘make-or-break product' has been said, and it is probably true,” Scaringe, Rivian's CEO, said in an interview.
The case for plug-in hybrids is changing. Heres what happened
Plus: More details on the long-awaited arrival of the Rivian R2, and what Tesla's investors want to hear on this week's earnings call. A lot of electric-vehicle advocates aren't big fans of hybrids. Many of them would say the sooner the world can go all-zero emissions, the better off well all be, and that hybrids risk prolonging our collective dependence on fossil fuels.
This is when 2027 Chevrolet Bolt production will end
A gas-powered Buick is moving from China to Kansas, but at the expense of the new $30,000 Chevy Bolt. The heavily updated 2027 Chevrolet Bolt was said to be "limited-production." Now we know just how limited. General Motors officials told Bloomberg the Bolt will only be made at its Kansas factory for about 18 months. In its place will come the gas-poweredBuick Envision, which is being reshored to the U.S. from China.
Lucids CEO gets candid about the EV mistake automakers won't talk about
"We need to better explain the superiority of that technology, versus what we have unfortunately done in the past," Marc Winterhoff said. As Lucid Motors faces a landmark year, interim CEO Marc Winterhoff got candid about one thing the auto industry got wrong about electric vehicles: marketing. Winterhoff said not enough car companies stressed the inherent strengths of EVs, like performance and interior space. Can car companies learn from this mistake as they face a slower year of U.S. sales?
Lucid's midsize platform will spawn three 'bodies'but it's done with sedans
Lucid Motors' interim CEO dropped some hints about its next act after the Gravity SUV. But it's done with four-door cars. Lucid Motors is preparing for a busy few years, including the launch of a Gravity robotaxi with Nuro and Uber, and its upcoming Midsize platform. Lucid's interim CEO, Marc Winterhoff, confirmed to InsideEVs that three Midsize "bodies" are coming. But one of them won't be a four-door sedan, Winterhoff said.
Rivian stumbled after the EV tax credit died. Now the R2 faces a huge test
Rivian set a delivery record in 2024, but it wasn't so lucky in 2025. The more affordable R2 could be the lifeline it needs. Rivian delivered42,247 vehicles in 2025, a drop from51,579 the year prior. The startup automaker took a sharp hit in the fourth quarter, as electric-vehicle tax credits came to an end. Rivian is now hanging its future on the more affordable R2, due out this year, as well as improvements to its autonomous driving platform and a technical partnership with Volkswagen.
The huge problem Waymo didnt see coming
Waymos self-driving robotaxis can successfully nail a tricky left turn, weave through lanes to drop you off at the airport, and safely pass a U-Haul thats idling in the middle of the street. But during a blackout, they apparently turn into four-wheel bricks. On Saturday, when a major power outage in San Francisco knocked out traffic signals, many Waymo vehicles didnt pull over to the side of the road or seek out a parking space.
Lexus should make the electric LFA—under one condition
Replacing the LFA's V-10 engine with batteries is understandably controversial, even for EV fans. But what if they're onto something? The original Lexus LFA has become the supercar version of a cult classic film. Praised by some (typically, those who actually drove it) and widely misunderstood by others (pretty much everyone else), it's taken years of internet hype for car enthusiasts to finally appreciate the signature howl of its V-10 engine and its state-of-the-art carbon-fiber construction.
