The influencer
In the early 1980s, Ireland was experiencing one of the worst prolonged recessions marked by, among other upheavals, soaring inflation and sky-high unemployment. After graduating Trinity College in Dublin with an engineering degree during the depths of the depression, Vince Sully, like many of his classmates, decided to move elsewhere to seek better opportunities. There is a place for everybody on social media.
Over the hedge
Hailing from the country town of Armidale in New South Wales, Kirsten Temple dared to cut the cord, venturing away from the familiar to embark on an investment industry odyssey. Her journey led her to London, whereby after a series of temporary jobs and an unpleasant stint at a hedge fund, she landed an investment research analyst role at Aon. As an investment research analyst, Temple met with managers, formed recommendations, and presented them to consultants.
Born to innovate
Hailing from a quaint village near Cambridge in the United Kingdom, Angus Whiteley fondly recalls his rural upbringing. At the age of 13, he attended boarding school for his formative years of education. After completing his studies, he pursued a law degree at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. However, even though he embarked on a journey of legal studies, his true passion remained elsewhere. Historically we've had a pretty low profile.
The value of foresight
While being an economist is an undoubtedly global role, so far nothing has been able to tear IFM Investors chief economist Alex Joiner away from Melbourne. Born and bred in the garden city, Joiner has enjoyed seeing his home evolve into a financial hub over the course of his 20-year career. I'm really looking forward to seeing the new generation of economists come through, and hopefully we can all learn from each other.
If it glitters, it's Gold
For over 5,000 years, gold has been the world’s ultimate store of value. Alternative currencies – like cowrie shells, copper, and now paper – have risen and fallen over the ages. But gold has outlasted them all. Gold’s appeal is in its aesthetic qualities, malleability (making it easy to produce coins and jewellery), and scarcity. To this day, gold is a widely trusted safe haven for investors. When uncertainty is high and risks are elevated, investors typically rush to the safety of gold.
Three themes that will shape the coming decade
Major shifts in the way the world does business can have vast, long-term impacts on economies. They also offer fantastic investment opportunities for fundamental investors. Three themes have emerged which will be major drivers of stock market performance over the coming decade: Deglobalisation, Decarbonization and De-dollarisation. We explore these in more detail below.. Deglobalisation The Deglobalisation trend started to emerge in 2019 with the US-China trade war.
