Welcome back to Prime Tire, where today I’m wondering where I put my giant cowboy hat. We’re on the cusp of crowning a new F1 champion after Kimi Antonelli’s Austin win. F1 mailbag: Will we have a multi-driver 2027 title fight? Can control software cause favoritism?
The 2026 Singapore Grand Prix provided plenty of storylines for Formula 1 fans, from wet-weather chaos in the sprint race to another dominant performance for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, yet this latest round of the championship still left some teams asking questions. Verstappen had a perfect run, with both pole positions and both victories on what was a sprint-race weekend. His performance should worry his rivals in terms of next season.
Red Bull extends F1 team principal Laurent Mekies’ contract through 2031 Original
Red Bull has extended F1 team principal Laurent Mekies’ contract through 2031. The team announced the extension Wednesday, days after its first grand prix and sprint race victories of the season. Shareholder Mark Mateschitz announced the extension, which runs one year beyond star driver Max Verstappen’s deal, during a team debrief in Milton Keynes, the team said in a statement. Financial terms were not disclosed.

‘Taking Formula E out of the echo chamber’ – a series built around sustainability changes tack
Look at Formula E’s new logo long enough, and a second letter appears. The “E” reads first. But tucked inside it is an “F” – two letters leaning forward in the same space, much like Formula 1’s previous logo, and the two ideas the series is now trying to sell at once. For 12 years, the all-electric series’ pitch has, spiritually, led with the E: electric power, and the future it was built to promote. Its new identity, unveiled Sept.
Wait, shorter F1 races? We can explain. Plus: Hadjar is back
Prime Tire Newsletter | This is The Athletic’s F1 newsletter. Sign up here to receive Prime Tire directly in your inbox twice a week during the season and weekly in the offseason. Welcome back to Prime Tire, where we’re wondering what the big deal is about F1 races getting shorter in 2027. Tidal friction from the moon has been slowing Earth’s spin for millennia. In my head, this is a funny observation that works scientifically, and it would be rude to double-check it.

Toyota’s late COTA heartbreak hands Ferrari WEC victory in Austin
Nicklas Nielsen, Antonio Fuoco and Miguel Molina won the 2026 Lone Star Le Mans in the No. 50 Ferrari 499P after Nyck de Vries, who had controlled the closing stages, reported a hydraulic problem inside the final 15 minutes and took the No. 7 Toyota to the pit lane for good.
AUSTIN, Texas — The sweaty elephant in the paddock at the Lone Star Le Mans is that it could’ve been worse. Central Texas has suffered triple-digit heat for weeks — Thursday’s 103-degree high even scuttled drivers’ traditional track walks. But the remnants of Tropical Storm Edouard brought a merciful breeze, a cameo of clouds, and a spit of rain; with race day peaking at 97 degrees, this Texas endurance-racing test might have actually gotten lucky.
Ferrari on pole at COTA by an eyelash as WEC title fight heats up
Antonio Giovinazzi put Ferrari on pole for the World Endurance Championship’s Lone Star Le Mans in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, repeating his 2024 pole at the circuit and beating Cadillac’s Jack Aitken by just about nothing at all. Giovinazzi’s 1:52.445 in the No. 51 Ferrari was matched to the thousandth by Aitken in the No. 38 Cadillac. The Italian keeps pole because he set the time first. “I would say it was a bit of luck,” Giovinazzi said.

FIA condemns online abuse of F1 stewards after Colapinto’s Dutch GP penalties
The FIA has condemned a wave of online abuse aimed at its race stewards following penalties handed down at Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix. In a statement Tuesday, posted on X alongside the United Against Online Abuse coalition, the governing body said officials had been targeted after applying sanctions in line with FIA statutes. “Disagreement with decisions is part of sport, but it must never justify threats or personal attacks,” the post read.

Roberto Martinez confirms Portugal departure after World Cup exit: ‘It doesn’t make sense to continue’ Original
Roberto Martinez has confirmed he will leave his role as Portugal coach following their World Cup last-16 exit at the hands of Spain. Portugal lost 1-0 at AT&T Stadium on Monday, having beaten Croatia 2-1 in the round-of-16 and finished second in their group behind Colombia. “It’s the end of the cycle. It’s important to have a new voice, a new leader,” Martinez said after the Spain game. “It had not been decided previously (that I would leave after the tournament).
How do soccer chants start? And do they work in U.S. fan culture? Original
Atlanta Braves center fielder Michael Harris II became a folk hero to strangers this week. Having spent the afternoon watching England beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in a World Cup match across town, a few hundred English soccer fans had wedged into a section of Truist Park in Atlanta for the Braves’ MLB game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The closest player to their seats was Harris, and by the middle innings, he had his own catalogue of chants.

On the eve of Portugal’s round-of-16 knockout meeting with Spain, the 41-year-old forward made clear he intends to keep needling the people writing them. Facing reporters ahead of Monday’s knockout tie at Dallas Stadium, Ronaldo faced the same questions that have followed him at this World Cup: about his critics and whether this is his last one.

How Norway’s Viking Row has captured the American imagination Original
ARLINGTON, Texas — The drum descended the stands like a sanctified relic, passed hand over hand through sections of fans who wouldn’t let it touch the ground. By the time its journey began from the fans gathered in the third deck to the pitch at Dallas Stadium, Norway had already done the hard part: a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast, sealed by Erling Haaland’s 86th-minute winner — the country’s first knockout-round win in its World Cup history.
Messi scores again as Argentina beat Jordan. Do world champions have perfect pathway to semi-finals? Original
Argentina got ready for the World Cup knockout stage with a x-x against Jordan in Dallas on Saturday night. The world champions came into the game having already qualified, and will face Cape Verde in Miami on July 3. Lionel Scaloni made nine changes to Argentina’s starting XI, dropping Lionel Messi to the bench. And one of those starters put Argentina ahead on 19 minutes — Giovani Lo Celso curling in a direct free-kick, helped by some questionable goalkeeping from Yazeed Abulaila.
Lionel Messi to start on the bench for Argentina against Jordan: ‘He will get minutes’ Original
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Lionel Messi, the World Cup’s leading scorer, will start on the bench against Jordan on Saturday night. “Leo will go to the bench,” Scaloni said at a press conference on Friday. “I’ll hold off on the final starting lineup, but Leo will come in later.” Messi, who turned 39 on Wednesday, would face 11 days without competitive action if he did not play at all against Jordan, with Argentina’s round-of-32 match set for July 3.

FIFA’s solution to empty World Cup luxury seats? Give them to volunteers Original
The first game at Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium was always going to be a revealing case study for the tournament’s attendance situation. A cavernous venue, two high-profile, competitive sides, in a large and sports-hungry North Texas market, easily accessible by most international flights. On paper, the ingredients were there for a rousing full house in Arlington, Texas. And at first glance, that is more or less what it looked like.

The Netherlands opens its 2026 World Cup campaign on Sunday against Japan, in one of the tournament’s toughest groups, after decades of high promise and empty hands at football’s biggest tournament. An accident denied Robert Kubica his Ferrari dream, so he made up for it at Le Mans
Regret is not a feeling that Robert Kubica dwells upon when discussing his racing career. But there is one thing he never got the chance to do. “In so many years, I kind of accepted many things, and I’m fine with what happened in my life, and I went beyond it,” Kubica, now 41, told The Athletic. “But to miss the opportunity to drive for Ferrari in F1 has always been creating some kind of emotions.” On another timeline, Kubica would have gotten that opportunity.
