Here are 10 reasons why video games are dirty cheaters.
Civilization VI Is A Game Of Tiny Enormous Changes
Sequels are hard. The Sophomore Curse is one thing, but what about when you’ve been kicking around for 25 years with a half-dozen titles under your belt, like Firaxis’ illustrious Civilization series? Especially for a game like Civilization, that hangs its hat on the strength and efficiency of its systems, you run the risk of either iterating too much and alienating a sizable existing player base, or playing it safe and boring everyone.
Video Games Need More Blood and Gore, Not Less
There are plenty of people who believe video games are too violent, but I believe the opposite: video games need more blood, gore and viscera, not less. The reason why relates to the origin of games, their roots in film, and the nature of humanity. The Story of the Kelly Gang is often regarded as the first feature-length film ever made. Shot in 1906, the Australian movie tells the story of real-life Aussie gangster Ned Kelly.
Gamifying Neoconservatism: The Eurocentric Ideals of Games
In the 1990 movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the troubled young protagonist Danny falls in with the wrong crowd, a shady group of characters who we later learn are affiliated with the diabolical villain Shredder. When Danny is taken to the group’s “hideout,” we see that it’s an abandoned warehouse-turned-arcade, filled with neon lights, rollerblade ramps and videogame arcade cabinets, populated by misfits who we’re shown don’t fit within the confines of society’s norms.
5 Narrative Devices Videogames Need To Stop Using
Games are often touted by their proponents as being a medium that opens up narrative doors that were previously inaccessible. Unlike literature or film, games offer players ways to interact with stories, characters and settings that take us from passive observers to active participants. However, in games as in anything else, the concept doesn’t always live up to the execution. Over the years, we’ve developed a mainstay of narrative tropes and delivery methods.
Twine, the Video-Game Technology for All
One of the most prominent and critically acclaimed Twine games has been Howling Dogs, a haunting meditation about trauma and escapism produced in 2012 by a woman named Porpentine. The gameplay begins in a claustrophobic metal room bathed in fluorescent light. Although you can’t leave, you can “escape” once a day by donning a pair of virtual-reality goggles.
