Nigeria: Let Basketball Breathe Again
What goes around, they say, comes around. In 2017, the sports ministry, then headed by Solomon Dalung, brought out guidelines for elections into sports federations with an instruction that those which had their own constitutions should organise theirs. The Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF was one of those which had a constitution approved by the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC and the sport's world governing body, Federation of International Basketball Federation, FIBA.
Africa: The Truth FIFA Must Be Told, By Patrick Omorodion
[Vanguard] The Holy Bible tells us in the book of Matthew 2:1-12 how the wise men came from the East following a star to find Jesus when he was born.
Nigeria: Inside Gusau's 'Rotten' NFF
There is no story trending in Nigeria's sports circle today that interests Nigerian football fans as the call on the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to either resign or not to bother to seek to return in the next election. Mainstream and social media platforms are buzzing with stories on what has happened or about to happen to the outgoing board of the NFF headed by Ibrahim Musa Gusau.

Senegal: The Sacrificial Lamb
opinion The Bible said in John 1:29 that Jesus Christ is the "Lamb of God", a sinless sacrifice provided by God to atone for our sins. And in John 3:16, it said, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life". Sacrificial lambs are used to save people or situations for the good of all. But such lambs should have a special place in the heart of those who used them for the good of all.
Nigeria/Morocco: Deliberate and Bold Decisions
There is an adage which says once bitten twice shy. That was what Morocco thought to itself after they lost the 2010 World Cup hosting right to South Africa. Former FIFA president, Sepp Blatter wanted to compensate Africa for the support the continent gave him all the years his mandate as head of the world football governing was renewed. Africa always gave a block vote to Blatter during their elective Congress, being the largest Confederation with 54 members.

Nigeria: The One-Man Supporter
One thing I took out of the 2025 African Nations Cup, AFCON which ended in Morocco last Sunday was not the organizational ability of the host which was commended by Europeans who hardly see anything good coming out of Africa. It wasn't even the standard of football displayed by all the teams which one of Nigeria's most celebrated strikers, Chief Olusegun Patrick Odegbami attributed to the good pitches at the stadia used for the competition.
The Oneman Supporter By Patrick Omorodion
It wasnt even the standard of football displayed by all the teams which one of Nigerias most celebrated strikers, Chief Olusegun Patrick Odegbami attributed to the good pitches at the stadia used for the competition. What caught my attention and most people around the world was how one man used his act to draw attention not only to his country and national football team but to the country s national hero who was assassinated many years ago.
Afn Playing The Ostrich By Patrick Omorodion
In 1977 during the first tenure of Olusegun Obasanjo as a military Head of State, the government had issues with Fela Anikulapo-Kuti over his caustic criticisms of the regime. One fateful day, February 18, 1977, a senior military officer ordered about a thousand soldiers to invade Fela's home he named Kalakuta Republic.
Osimhen Please Watch It By Patrick Omorodion
My dad, late Pa Robinson Omorodion may God bless his soul used to tell us that at a certain point in a mans life, he should pause and ask himself a question. That is mostly when almost everything he does portrays him in bad light or attracts negative comments about his actions or inactions. That is the level out star boy, Victor Osimhen is at the moment. And he must watch it if he hopes to remain in the good books of Nigerian fans who, ironically, are hungrier for victories than Osimhen himself.
On The March Again By Patrick Omorodion
Towards the 1993 general election in Nigeria, one of the candidates in the presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola used the above title as his campaign slogan. Today I use it, not for a political campaign but for the round of 16 football battle the Super Eagles would be going into at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. Why did I use this title? It is because of the controversy stirred up by the reported prophecy of Primate Elijah Ayodele concerning one of the Super Eagles players, Ademola Lookman.
Afcon On Your Marks Set By Patrick Omorodion
For 29 days beginning from today, all eyes would be focused on Morocco, the new bride of the Confederation of African Football, CAF and Federation of International Football Associations, FIFA, as they host the 30th edition of the African Nations Cup, AFCON. This competition holds every two years and on even number days until 2013 when South Africa hosted the 2014 edition was moved forward because CAF needed to avoid it clashing with 2014 World Cup which Brazil hosted.
One Embarrassment Too Many By Patrick Omorodion
The phrase Sword of Democles is described as an impending doom, a situation where someone lives under the threat of a sudden, catastrophic event or danger. That is exactly what Nigeria sports is facing now. In exactly forty eight hours from today if nothing is done to clear the doubts of the Athletics Integrity Unit, AIU of World Athletics, the hammer will fall on the countrys athletics body, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN.
Knowing When To Quit By Patrick Omorodion
The Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 3 and verse one that there is time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. One African proverb says that if one over stays in a latrine, he would begin to see flies of different colours. This means that if you dont quit from a position when the ovation is loudest, the same mouth people used in praising you, they will also use in ridiculing you when you start floundering.
Like Apc Like Nff By Patrick Omorodion
In 2014, some members of the All Progressive Congress, APC then in the opposition came together to hound Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP out of government. Part of their reasons was that President Jonathan was planning to remove fuel subsidy, an action they said would worsen the plight of Nigerians. Ten years after, the same APC stalwarts and their loyalists have kept mute over the same crime of removal of fuel subsidy and maladministration they accused Jonathan of.
Dudu In The Eyes Of Sunday Dare By Patrick Omorodion
Last Wednesday in Lagos, Godwin Dudu-Orumens book, SPORTS, POLITICS AND POWER was launched. And the book reviewer was none other than the former Sports Minister, Mr. Sunday Dare who is now Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu. I bring to you his views on the book and what it means to Nigerias sports. Enjoy it. There are stories that begin as whispers - gentle, almost unnoticed - until time reveals that they were the opening notes of a lifelong symphony.
Eagles Give Us This Day By Patrick Omorodion
Give us this day is verse 11 of the Book of Matthew chapter 9 which talks about our Lords prayer. Jesus Christ was teaching his disciples how to pray so that Our Father in Heaven, who knows all things we need would give us our daily bread. That is the prayer on the lips of most Nigerians in these days of fear, hunger and want, occasioned by insecurity.
The Die Is Cast By Patrick Omorodion
The Roman General, Julius Caesar made this statement popular many centuries ago. In gambling, its a game of throwing a dice, a game of hazard or chance. That is the crossroad the Super Eagles have reached in their attempt to qualify for the 2026 World Cup scheduled to hold in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Like the Jamaican reggae crooner, Jimmy Cliff sang, it is a hard way to travel.
Another Unpalatable Story By Patrick Omorodion
When Anezi Okoro wrote his comedic novel, One Week, One Trouble, about a boy who got into trouble in school almost every week, he never knew it would fit into the character of the Nigeria Football Federation, especially the current one headed by Ibrahim Musa Gusau. Like the proverbial tortoise that is always in the news for some mischievous behaviours, the Gusau-led Board of the NFF is always in the news for actions tied to incompetence.
Psychologist For Nwabali By Patrick Omorodion
An African pidgin proverb says that dog wey go loss no dey hear hunters whistle. Meaning anyone who doesnt listen to advise is liable to get himself or herself into trouble sooner than later. That is what is playing out now with Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali.
Down To The Wire By Patrick Omorodion
The Bible tells us in Luke 21:19 that By your endurance you will win your lives. It explains the importance of perseverance and enduring spirit in overcoming lifes challenges. When you are faced with lifes challenges and you decide to face the challenge headlong without chickening out, you are bound to succeed. It may be this belief that inspired Justin Bieber, a Canadian singer to write the song Never say never.
Heads Must Roll By Patrick Omorodion
Todays headline is taken from a South African newspaper, Sowetan. It derived its name from Soweto, an abbreviation of South Western Townships, suburbs in southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa. In the 20th century, the Townships housed Black workers for the gold mines and eventually became a major symbolic center of the anti-apartheid struggle. No wonder the Sowetan newspaper has a left-leaning editorial tone, for its almost two million readership nationwide.
Poor Funding Of Sports By Patrick Omorodion
Etymology shows that the phrase different strokes for different folks has its origin from the US in the 50s. It was however, the boxing legend, Muhammad Ali who is said to have popularised it in November 1966 while explaining his boxing strategy during his many fights. Why am I bringing this here? It is because at the recently concluded World Championship in Tokyo, Japan, our girl, Oluwatobiloba Amusan picked a silver in the womens 100m hurdles and the media described it as a golden silver.
The Dikko Challenge By Patrick Omorodion
A popular African proverb says that when the Agama lizard falls from a height, it nods to praise itself for the achievement. It doesnt wait for applause from those who may be watching from close quarters like it was done recently at the World Championships in Tokyo when Swedish pole vaulter, Arnmand Duplantis once again broke his own world record after scaling a new height of 6.30 meters 20 feet, 8 inches.
: The Africa
Right from the days of old, people express rage when things that should be smooth go awry. Especially when they know that efforts have been made to see good results. Notable instance of people expressing rage include Moses who God sent on an errand to deliver the tablet containing the Ten Commandments to the people of Israel.
News --
World acclaimed Jamaican reggae crooner Jimmy Cliff had a song ‘Struggling Man’. Part of the lyrics of the song went thus: As the sun lights the day and the moon lights the night, Struggling man keeps reaching for the higher heights. So we plan for tomorrow as we live for today. Like a flower we bloom and then later fade away. This is exactly what my dear country, Nigeria has turned into. A struggling country, and like Jimmy Cliff sang, Nigeria has become like a flower which blooms but later fades.

Nigeria: Between d'Tigers and 'Tigresses
In the Book of James, chapter 4 and verse 6, we are told that God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. When a man knows in his heart that a feat wasn't achieved by the effort put in his plan for a task but goes ahead to claim the glory resulting from the success of that task, God will surely expose him. Why am I saying this?
Crazy Moments Here Again By Patrick Omorodion
When Karl Marx stated many years ago that Religion is the opium of the people, he didnt know that people will rephrase it in later years It has been recoined today to state that football is the opium of the masses. That football can people temporarily forget their sufferings caused by bad governance, especially in Nigeria.
Visions And Dreams By Patrick Omorodion
The Bible tells us in Proverbs 22:6 that when parents train up their children in the way they should go, when they are old they will not depart from it. One thing that is very clear is that only the Creator knows the end from the beginning. No parent knows how his kid would end. It however, takes the ability of a parent to think about or plan the future with wisdom that will make his child achieve the vision he has for him or her.
Omolayole Celebrates Uncle Sam 90 By Patrick Omorodion
When God created man, He planned that the man will live for a very long time. The Bible we are told mentioned two lifespans for man: 120 years as a limit set by God in Genesis 6:3, and 70-80 years as a common lifespan in Psalm 90:10. Genesis 6:3 states thus, My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.
Osimhen And Napolis Meanness By Patrick Omorodion
The Holy Bible in Colossians 3:21 warns fathers to avoid embittering or provoking children so they do not become discouraged. There is also an African believe that a father who doesnt want the progress of his child could be likened to a wizard. By inference, that is what Napoli club president, Aurelio de Laurentiis is doing, trying to hinder the progress of his player, Victor Osimhen who put in everything to ensure that Napoli rose again after 33 years.
Compulsory Insurance For Sports People By Patrick Omorodion
I started this piece by observing a minute silence for these 22 heroes from Kano State who lost their lives while returning home after representing their State at the 22nd National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games 2024 held in Ogun State from May 16-30, 2025. They are Nasiru Abdullahi, Aminu Muhammad, Shehu Saidu, Usman Muhammad, Sani Yusuf, Muhammad Aminu, Hamal Dahiru, Abdurrahman Muhd, Abdulaziz Auwalu and Nasiru Adam.

Coaches Debts Nff Should Come Clean By Patrick Omorodion
Minutes later, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF through its Secretary General, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, issued a condolence message commiserating with the family and the football fraternity over his death. In his reaction to Chukwus death, his team mate and former Attorney General of Rivers State, Adokiye AmiesimakaberatedtheNFF,askingthemtostopshedding crocodile tears because they owed him for a very long time. Game Changers By Patrick Omorodion
The Bible in Isaiah 43:19 tells us that God is the ul- timate Game Changer because He tells us that He is the game changer in our life. For I am about to do something new.. Apart from Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, the Bible also mentioned certain biblical figures, who God used significantly to alter the course of events or peoples lives. Some of the Biblical figures include Noah, Abraham, Moses, Peter, Jonah, Hosea, Esther, among others.
Nff Goes Dumb By Patrick Omorodion
A popular African proverb says that a bad workman quarrels with his tools. This means that an incompetent person who does his work poorly will usually blame it on someone or anything except himself. This is the case with the managers of Nigerias most popular sport football, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF. How else can one explain the constant changes of handlers of the senior mens football team, the Super Eagles.
The Faith That Works By Patrick Omorodion
Last week I wrote about the desires of Victor Osimhen and the demands of Super Eagles new coach, Eric Sekou Chelle as they prepared for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda in Kigali and Zimbabwe in Uyo. The two desires of Osimhen came to pass, first ensuring that he and his teammates put up a good fight to pick the maximum points away to Rwanda in Kigali, a feat they havent achieved before.

New West Brom manager Tony Mowbray revealed he would closely monitor the defender’s progress before considering him for selection.

Still On IG’s Tenure Controversy | Punch
THERE are some things even the law is powerless to stop. One such issue is the renewed controversy over the tenure extension of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to October 2027. Omoyele Sowore, a rights activist, stoked the fire afresh by referring to Egbetokun on his X handle as an “illegal IGP.” The fiery debate continued even after the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, affirmed that Egbetokun is a legal occupant of the IG’s office.
Ronaldo: 40 and Still Counting, By Patrick Omorodion
Those who said life begins at 40 could have said so because of this legend, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, gifted to the world by Portugal. He turned 40 on Wednesday to join the exclusive club of players who, at that age, are/were still scoring goals. On Monday, two days before the milestone age, CR7, as he is popularly known, was on the score sheet twice for his club in an Asian Champions League match against UAE’s Al-Wasl.

Trump’s Second Term: The Illusion of the “Lesser Evil” By Tosin Adeoti...(Forwarded)
For some reason, just when I decide to take a step back from American politics, I find myself pulled right back in. The latest debate? The claim that the Democrats “went too far”, with transgender policies, lax immigration enforcement, and attempts to cancel Dave Chappelle over his jokes.
No To Gaza Displacement | ThisDayLive
In his first meeting with a foreign leader after returning to power as President of the United States, Mr Donald Trump has left the diplomatic world in a bit of a shock. His suggestion for a permanent solution to the Israel-Hamas crisis is the relocation of the displaced and wounded Palestinian population of Gaza to the neighbouring states of Egypt and Jordan while the devastated strip is reconstructed into a new ‘Riviera of the Middle East’.
Letting Lesser Sports Breathe By Patrick Omorodion
The Bible tells us that people perish for lack of knowledge. And the government of Nigeria at a time worsened the situation by removing history as a subject in our schools curriculum. Tell me, what did they aim to achieve with that decision. Thank God the subject has been reintroduced in our schools curriculum. Our pupils and students need to be taught the correct history of Nigeria. Why did I bring this up?
Nigeria: Outrage in the Land
In my little village of Ekpon in Edo State, the elders used to talk about the tortoise always being in the news. That it is always involved in one scandal or the other. A Nigerian writer, Anezi Okoro wrote a novel, One Week One Trouble in 1972. The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF may have been on Okoro's mind. And like, Wilson Tagbo in Okoro's novel who jumps from one trouble to another every week, no month passes without one ill-decision coming from the NFF.
