Who let the Labs out?
Rural people are no more uniform than anyone else, says BASC’s head of social science Patrick O’Reilly. He explains why rural minister Jenny Riddell-Carpenter’s pubs and Labradors remarks missed the point about rural Britain. I am neither a farmer nor a shooter. Over the course of my career, however, I have had the good fortune to live in and learn from numerous rural communities.
Mischief managed: the bias in Defra’s game shooting review
Dr Patrick O’Reilly, BASC’s head of social science, casts a critical eye over Defra’s approach to its call for evidence on game shooting. Defra’s call for evidence on game shooting reminds me of the Marauder’s Map in the Harry Potter universe. This magical document lets its owner get up to no good, after which the phrase “mischief managed” would erase any traces of bad behaviour.

BASC’s initiative on cultural recognition gains wider backing
As more organisations engage with the UK’s Living Heritage inventories, the groundwork that secured shooting’s admissibility within the UNESCO framework is beginning to bear fruit, writes Patrick O’Reilly. BASC’s efforts to secure cultural recognition for shooting continue to gather momentum, with more organisations now engaging in the process.

Cultural recognition for shooting
Home / News / Cultural recognition for shooting With submissions expected to open soon for the government’s national living heritage lists, BASC’s Patrick O’Reilly looks at what’s involved and why shooting deserves a place on the list. Protecting rural and coastal traditions Across the world, rural and coastal lives and livelihoods face growing threats. Economic pressures, environmental challenges and increasing demands on land management all put strain on those who live and work in these areas.

Opinion: Let’s preserve what makes Scarborough special
Scarborough is growing – fast. In many ways, that’s good news. There are new residents, new homes and new jobs in our community. But the quick pace of change also puts a lot of pressure on open spaces, natural areas, beach access and our ability to maintain clean water. On Nov. 5, voters will have the chance to take action to protect those things and more. Scarborough Question 3 authorizes the town to issue bonds for up to $6 million to protect our community and the places that make it special.

On July 7, 1990, protesters in Nairobi took to the streets to demand free elections and political pluralism in Kenya.
Britain’s Covert Support for Paramilitary Group that Bombed Dublin Fifty Years Ago
Declassified files detail the British government’s secret meetings with loyalist paramilitary group The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) in 1974, and the political support afforded the organisation during its ongoing campaign of violence. Meetings would occur both at the home of the Northern Ireland Office (NIO), Stormont Castle, and a secluded government owned property known as Laneside.

Of parachutes and helicopters: reconstructing the decolonisation agenda in environmental research
Senior Indonesian diplomat Arif Havas Oegroseno recently contrasted Indonesia’s peatland restoration with Europe’s poorer efforts. In a tweet, he suggested, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, that Europe should seek Indonesian advice and technical assistance. The statement echoed comments at COP26, which hailed progress in Indonesia’s peatland restoration and research. Senior Indonesian diplomat Arif Havas Oegroseno’s tweet from January 2022.
Psychotherapy with Former Cult Members
“They couldn’t tell me what happened.” “They couldn’t tell me what happened.” Relenting, I told Bill that I’d be happy to meet with him, and suggested a coffee shop in Berkeley. As with each of these referrals, I was curious to hear Bill’s story. Although I would not provide psychotherapy to him, I hoped to explain to him how cults operate.

How Bristolians making DIY protective equipment are propping up the city's supply
The Bristol Cable A volunteer army is producing equipment to keep frontline staff at Southmead Hospital safe from coronavirus. Jess Connett investigates why their efforts are needed. For sonographer Carrie Montgomery, wearing a mask at work is not the norm. For the ten years she’s worked at North Bristol NHS Trust, first at Frenchay Hospital and now Southmead, a pair of gloves was sufficient. But for the past four weeks, her morning routine involves gloves, a gown, a mask, and now a visor.
Here Comes the Snow
It’s Macy’s Day. My partner and I are bundled up on the couch, watching a livestream of the floats scuffing down 34th Street. A high school marching band stomps onto the screen, whatever song they’re attempting lost in the racket. “What is it with the marching bands?” “Don’t know. Isn’t it weird how they have that, like, gun choreography?” My partner and I have had this exact conversation every year since she started watching the parade with me.
Robyn Sarah’s exquisitely untrendy poetry · The Walrus
My favourite poem by Robyn Sarah is a single sentence running in short, jagged lines halfway down the page. Called “Echoes in November,” it starts by reminding the reader that “correspondences are everywhere” and that things can “borrow / essence not their own,” before vividly depicting a kitchen scene in which leaves streaking past a window are juxtaposed against a figure chopping vegetables.
