Rosalind Plowright Rosalind Plowright will be singing the fiendishly difficult role of Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera at Opera Holland Park from 25 July. In this version, the role is known as Madame Arvidson, based on the real-life Anna Ulrica Arfvidsson – the opera underwent many versions, moving the setting from Stockholm to Boston to satisfy the censors.

Interview: Ernst Meisner, new Artistic Director of Dutch National Ballet
Ernst Meisner has held a newly created position at the Dutch National Ballet – Associate Director of Talent Development – since February last year, which includes being the Artistic Director of the Junior Company. He is also Artistic Director of the Dutch National Ballet Academy, a post he has held since 2018. From next year his job title will be simpler – Artistic Director of Dutch National Ballet. He takes over from Ted Brandsen, who has directed the company for over two decades, in August 2026.
Obituary: David Drew, Royal Ballet Principal, with the company 56 years
David Drew, for 56 years a member of The Royal Ballet, has died after a long battle with illness. He described himself as one of a ‘bridge generation’ of dancers. The longevity of his career meant that he worked with many figures from the Ballets Russes – Tamara Karsavina, Bronislava Nijinska, Lydia Lopokova, Léonide Massine, George Balanchine, Alicia Markova, Sergei Grigoriev and Lubov Tchernicheva – but also taught many dancers and choreographers working today.
