Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

School-organised work experience at the Donegal Democrat

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes - in my first summer job at the local paper aged 17, I turned up with an electric typewriter!

How is social media changing news?

It already has - my worry is that too many people assume what they are reading is accurate without checking its validity

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Kevin Turvey (one for the kids there!)

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Freelancing is a lifestyle - and if you can embrace the uncertainties I don't think there is a better job in the world

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Nothing in particular springs to mind

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email every time - I try to respond to every pitch unless it is completely irrelevant

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft 365, Adobe, Webex

What's your favorite social network?

For all it's faults, it would have to be X

Who do you wish followed you?

No one springs to mind - but as a massive Nottingham Forest fan I would plump for Evangelos Marinakis

Why did you become a journalist?

I enjoyed writing and the discipline required to succeed as a freelance journalist appealed to me

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

We didn't have a school paper

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Tragic I know but it was an article that appeared in the Nottingham Forest match day programme on being an Irish-based supporter

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Think of yourself as a sole trader, get your accounts in order from the start and don't be afraid to ask for payment

When's the best time to pitch you?

Afternoons once I have cleared the email backlog

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Anything that can be summarised in three sentences or less

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Too many to mention :-(

What's your favorite drink?

Grape juice

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In the gym or watching/playing sport

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Financial Times

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That freelancers cover product and appointment news
