How do we value the souls of women athletes?
“The unfolding of the bare human soul: that is what interests me.” ~Bruce Lee That is easily one of my top 10 favorite quotes. I am a long-time supporter of women’s sports for precisely this reason. This is an article about gender, athletics, and economics. Now that you know the subject matter and the primary underlying theme, I hope you can stay with me.
To Those Who Knock
It was May of 2014, and I was staying Memorial Day weekend at All Saints of America Orthodox Church in De Queen, AR. I woke up early Saturday morning to take a day trip. I was traveling 60mph, and just 30 miles into my trip, approaching Broken Bow, OK, my engine started to sputter and the tachometer bounced forebodingly up and down. Not good. I was on the wrong side of the first red light in town, slowed to a stop, and within three seconds, everything flickered out of service.
How Your Own Musical Taste Can Be an Oppressor or Liberator
My favorite movie ever since I first saw it in high school is “O Brother Where Art Thou?” I bought the soundtrack, and, like all millennials in their teens, I read every page of the booklet in the CD case. From page to page, as it tells the story of the songs, events, and characters therein, despite being loosely based on The Odyssey, the reader quickly gets the impression that the music was not created for the movie, but rather the movie was created for the music.
Musing on Strategic Benevolence
I am about to leave the happiest job I’ve ever had as the sole financial officer for a small nonprofit. I’m headed for a financial leadership career in the supply chain sector that will provide more for my family than ever before. The story behind that is possibly for a future post. In my current role, I’ve learned a considerable portion about the challenges nonprofits negotiate, especially financial ones. It got me thinking about how best to help them help their people and communities.
Why I’m Not Tempted to Apostate
I hope this title is appreciated and that the article is appreciated at least half as much as the title. I enjoy approaching serious subjects with a casual, Kermit the Frog tea sip before I get serious. We are all naturally inclined to think that the proof is in the pudding. As interprets nature around us, we are wired to interpret nature between us and within us. Nobody should be surprised that today’s Christians, especially those of the younger generations, are losing their taste for the pudding.
From Confusion to Communion
“When the Most High came down and confused the tongues, He divided the nations. But when He distributed the tongues of fire He called all to unity. Therefore with one voice we glorify the All Holy Spirit.” Tribalism is deeply embedded in human DNA. I have read before of studies showing that when people are divided into groups, even completely at random, they immediately begin talking about how their group is better than other groups.
The Teacher is a True Master Who Can Use Even the Strangest of Tools
My faith is Orthodox Christianity. The life that led me to it was hardly orthodox (small o), nor was it anything special. Perhaps even less so is the world I have lived through since I came onto the Path. The Teacher is a true master who can use even the strangest of tools. Therefore I rejoice in the Truth and the Teacher in the midst of the tools and wish to share the unfinished product that is being built.
