Passenger of SUV blocking bike lane throws liquid on cyclists
This is all no fun, and it isn't really even springtime yet! As an insight, SUV drivers aren't necessarily more nor less aggressive or insensitive than other drivers. We might as easily suggest that with their higher vantage point and view of the road especially at intersections over parked cars, they are more at ease and thereby less prone to rage than folks in their cheap shorty cars wallowing in their inferiority complex and thus acting out.
Passenger of SUV blocking bike lane throws liquid on cyclists
EDIT: Just submitted via BLU so you have on official record of it... Very timely post because I was just wondering about an extremely similar incident which happened to me nearly 2 months ago (and no clear police action since then despite extremely clear evidence).
How do you mount your pony?
For the longest time I've always mounted my bicycle from the non drive side. Recently I've developed a bit of pain in my left hip and knee and found it might be necessary to carefully swing my left leg over from the drive side to even out the workload to my body instead. It feels like I'm learning to ride all over again! Just curious to see if there are more experienced ambidextrous riders out there and if they have any tips they can share.

How rusty if your chain?
The chain on the pink machine is so rusty... This is a-new-chain by "new chain" standards. Got it from LBS back in December as I was putting this build together. SRAM single speed chain to be exact. I've only cleaned it once before - a couple of weeks ago. Took chain off and submitted it to a sonic cleaner bath. Was so nice and warm and clean - then I lubed it... and just this week, back at it again.

Moving, Job Hunting - How Much Is Bike Riding a Factor In Your Choices?
I moved today from D.C. to Bethesda. Shorter commute to work (still bike/metro), quieter (my DC neighborhood was a little too heavy on the party, and I’m saving $$$. Before settling on a location, I wanted to make sure I’d still ride every day and live in a place that doesn’t require a car to enjoy restaurants, grocery shop, and get around. As I’m resting after a long day’s move, I was wondering how many of you consider your bike and rideability into where you live?
Aggressive left turns.
How often does this happen to everyone? You’re cycling through an intersection and a car is waiting to turn left and right as you clear them they are practically turning into your rear wheel. What the hell is up with that? Tags: Share Tweet Facebook Facebook Views: 411 ▶ Reply to This

Way to Make Friends... Get in Front of Another Cyclist and Coast
As Ernesto points out above, happens with any gender. What's so great about cycling (and competitive running) is that there's LOTS of overlap and variation across genders of gear, stamina, ability, effort, distance being traveled etc. etc. which means if someone IS competitive, then we don't have to limit our competition and handicapping to only half the population.
Way to Make Friends... Get in Front of Another Cyclist and Coast
This morning this guy made a point of positioning himself in front of me (assuming I wouldn't go as fast?) but there is this lovely downhill and he wasted it by coasting (his bike needed oil as it squeaked but that's a different issue)… So I got stuck behind him as he coasted down the hill because he took the far left position in the bike lane. When we hit the turn, I pedaled past him at a significantly faster speed. And then it happened.

Air pollution masks
I'm so tired of buses and other diesel vehicles driving past, leaving a trail of lead and other nasty-smelling things. Has anyone tried any air pollution masks? Can anyone recommend/disrecommend any? Tags: ▶ Reply to This

Air pollution masks
Before buying anything, I'd google a bunch and get some ideas if you have any alternatives, or what the real risk is. I think we are most worried about the buses because you can see them, but most pollution is really really small, and so stinky as diesel is, it might not be the right risk to go after.

Electric Bikes Are About to Go Mainstream
But then this happens: Homemade e-bike project catches fire, destroys home Published October 9, 2018 HAMPSTEAD, Md. (BRAIN) — Maryland fire investigators say a 25-year-old man assembling a do-it-yourself e-bike caused a fire that destroyed a house. No one was injured in the fire, which started Sunday afternoon.
Electric Bikes Are About to Go Mainstream
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/09/nyregion/are-electric-bikes-abou... Don’t ‘real’ cyclists hate e-bikes? Yes, but they shouldn’t. Riding an e-bike still takes work. Unlike a moped, pedal-assist doesn’t mean you simply let the thing fling you forward. You’re still pedaling, but as you do, the motor enhances your efforts. When you climb a hill, you pedal with more force, and the bike funnels in just enough power to let you rise with ease.
JUMP bikes in Chicago?
Has anyone seen these around town? I saw this one on Clark at Randolph this morning (11/2/17). This is the first I've seen. Are they going to be competition for Divvy? I was on my own bike so I didn't really check it out to see if it can be rented. It was locked to the rack with a built-in lock. Tags: ▶ Reply to This

Tariffs to Cause Costs of Bikes and Bike Products to Rise Soon
The upcoming import tariffs that President Trump will impose on Chinese goods is going to include $1Billion in bike products. This ultimately will cause many bicycles and many bicycle-related products to rise soon. It is yet to be known if they will improve competitive conditions for any remaining U.S. bike/products manufacturer's. "The tariffs come into effect on Monday September 24, 2018 starting at 10%.
Tempted to start a new category
Got hit by an uber today. I was coming eastbound on Superior, making the turn onto southbound Wells. I had the light — hell, I even signaled! An Uber had just picked up a fare, facing northbound on Wells, just south of Superior. He wanted to be going southbound, so in true Uber fashion, he just pulled a U-turn... right into me as I was making the turn.
Struggling former city biker, now suburban mom.
Are there any parents here who live in the burbs and still sort of ride like you did in the city before you had kids? I’m struggling... I’m on the North Shore and although we Ride close to our house, I’m struggling so much with the timing, setup and my work and daughters schedule. It’s faster in most situations to drive which is super different too.

Sad Uber Event
An autonomous Uber vehicle struck and killed a woman crossing the street on her bicycle: Not commenting as to who or what was at fault, just saying it's sad whenever a cyclist (or driver or pedestrian, for that matter), is injured or killed.
