What was your first job as a journalist?

Ad salesman at my hometown weekly newspaper. I became a reporter/photographer after a few weeks.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. And a Linotype.

How is social media changing news?

It's making it less reliable. I could spend 24 hours knocking false stories on Facebook and Twitter. I believe it will get better.

Hildy Johnson

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Journalists give people the information they need to understand the world.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#mitthappens

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

By email. Those follow-up phone calls are annoying since they come early in the morning and I work 3 p.m. to midnight.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Saxotech, InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop, Illustrator, Timeline JS, Google Docs, Calendar, Gmail etc.
