“The Secret Life of Pets 2” ~ our favourite pets are back for a worthy sequel
Written by: Peggy Marie, Staff Writer for CC2K “THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2” is another fun filled little romp for the kids. With a few new additions to the cast, most notably Harrison Ford as farm dog Rooster. But the biggest of all additions, a baby is added to the family much to the disgruntlement of our lead dog Max (Patton Oswalt). This sequel actually divides our team into three smaller stories with a somewhat vague theme tying it all together.
Pattern Recognition of Chemical Waves: Finding the Activation Energy of the Autocatalytic Step in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reaction
Introduction The Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction is a chemical system commonly used to demonstrate the unusual dynamic behavior of homogeneous oscillating reactions.
REVIEW: “1917” (2019) UNIVERSAL PICTURES
Peggy Marie 25 seconds ago Entertainment, Entertainment News, Movie Reviews “1917” is a cinematic feast for the eyes, with long expansive shots that follow the lead characters as they execute their mission. It does not hide the horrors that existed in trench warfare, it shows them for their brutality and abundance. A war that is now a century old and therefore no longer widely talked about or understood, is vividly captured in this stunning dramatization by Director Sam Mendes.
REVIEW: “CLEMENCY” (2019) NEON PICTURES
Peggy Marie 2 mins ago Entertainment, Entertainment News, Movie Reviews “CLEMENCY” opens with an agonizingly difficult scene and is definitely not for the faint of heart. We are watching a man die. Actually, incorrect. We are watching Victor Jimenez (Alex Castillo) being served his death penalty execution sentence by injection where a good vein cannot be found for the needle and it’s going horrifically wrong in every which way possible.
REVIEW: “BOMBSHELL” (2019) LIONSGATE/ANNAPURNAPICTURES
Peggy Marie 33 seconds ago Entertainment, Entertainment News, Movie Reviews Director Jay Roach’s newest drama is the aptly titled “BOMBSHELL” in which we see a literal sex harassment bomb being dropped with not only the star talent names that are all over the cast of this true story, but of the toxic effects of Chairman Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) as well, and what ensues during this well deserved take down.
REVIEW: “RICHARD JEWELL” (2019) WARNER BROS.
The title of this film “RICHARD JEWELL” is our subject matter as well. Jewell is a security guard who was hailed as a hero for finding a pipe bomb and thus preventing a bigger tragedy in 1996 during the time of the Atlanta Olympics. The film focuses on the events of the bombing itself and what takes place in the life of Richard Jewell post-bombing. Imagine being falsely accused of a terrorist act that killed and injured people. Imagine that you are the FBI’s primary suspect.
REVIEW: “QUEEN & SLIM” (2019) UNIVERSAL PICTURES
Peggy Marie 46 seconds ago Entertainment, Entertainment News, Movie Reviews 0 Views Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) open our story on what is clearly a first date. She an attorney and he a passive religious type, not seeming to even have one single thing in common down to even the tiniest of facts that she orders a salad while he orders steak and eggs.
REVIEW: “21 BRIDGES” (2019) STX ENTERTAINMENT
Peggy Marie 14 seconds ago Entertainment, Entertainment News, Movie Reviews 0 Views “21 BRIDGES” opens with a young Andre Davis (Christian Isaiah) at the funeral of his police officer father who was killed by some drug dealers and the clear effect it has on him. Scroll ten years forward to an adult Andre (Chadwick Boseman) who has grown up to be a cop himself, but one with a notable tendency to shoot first and ask questions later.
REVIEW: “A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD” (2019) SONY/TRISTAR PICTURES
Movie marketing can be funny sometimes. It can direct you with a simple trailer into thinking a movie is or isn’t something or sway your opinion one way vs. another. “A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD” is a film you naturally think will be all about Mr. Rogers, the beloved American host of the PBS half-hour children’s educational television series and everyone’s favourite neighbor.
REVIEW: “FORD V. FERRARI (2019) 20TH CENTURY FOX
Biopics can be a hard sell at times. “FORD v FERRARI” is one of the latest true stories out of Hollywood that will be hitting the big screen, and here’s why this one deserves to be seen whether you are a racing fan or not, it absolutely deserves your attention. In the mid-’60s, Ford and Ferrari fought it out for real at most brutal of all car races, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a road race that lasts almost as long as this film.
REVIEW: “MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN” (2019) WARNER BROS. // POST Q & A: EDWARD NORTON, GUGU MBATHA-RAW
Set in a tough but glamorous moment in time, “MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN” follows Lionel Essrog (Edward Norton) after the murder of his closest friend and colleague Frank Minna (Bruce Willis). Lionel is hellbent on unraveling the reason and discovering why Frank was killed and who is the killer. He finds himself on a paper trail across Brooklyn, never giving up on his plan.
REVIEW: “DOCTOR SLEEP” (2019) WARNER BROS.
In “DOCTOR SLEEP” little Danny Torrance is now a grown up Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor), and is still understandably haunted by the things that happened to him at the Overlook Hotel as a small child. Most days he drinks his hours away to silence the voices in his head.
REVIEW: “MARRIAGE STORY” (2019) NETFLIX
As with some of Bambauch other films, “MARRIAGE STORY” is long on talk and short on cinema. While most are at least a good watch, this one tricks you into thinking you’re getting a marriage story for the first five minutes, but it’s got a little trick up it’s sleeve and you soon find out that what you almost fell for, is nothing of the sort.
REVIEW: “THE IRISHMAN” (2019) NETFLIX
“THE IRISHMAN” is both a period piece and an almost historical type piece as you need to know a little history to understand the direction of the narrative and flow of this epic film. The movie, while following Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran (Robert De Niro) as our designated main character, revolves around Teamsters union boss James “Jimmy” Riddle Hoffa (Al Pacino).
‘How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’ sends its characters on a lovely last flight
Written by: Valerie Kalfrin, CC2K Staff Writer There once was a gangly Viking who wanted to be a dragon-slayer like everyone else, except when he wounded one, he found that he couldn’t kill a creature as frightened as he. The two became tentative friends, then a fierce and loyal team who opened their friends’ eyes to a new way of life.
Comic Preview: ‘The Sequels’ questions whether our nostalgia is endangering our future
Written by: Laura Hong-Tuason, CC2K Comics Editor Remember when the movie, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, came into our lives and the misunderstood alien captured our hearts with his “E.T. phone home” line? It was an awe-inspiring tale, one in which E.T. and a boy named Elliott formed an unbreakable bond.
The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies
We’re slowly closing out the summer movie season and, perhaps like me, you’re wondering where did all the mid-budget, adult dramas go from our theaters? Perhaps like me you’re wondering how the superhero movies and franchises emerged to dominate the box office? And maybe you’re wondering what happened to the likes of Adam Sandler and Will Smith, who have been unable to draw in a crowd, and as a result have suffered flop after flop?
