Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

To ask the prime minister of Malaysia why he barred the online media from a press conference.

How is social media changing news?

It's forcing to journalists to be more creative, original to get attention to their stories.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A lifelong challenge to understand and report about this changing, complex world as it really is.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

A notebook, pen, mobile phone, laptop, camera but the most important tool is my mind.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Keep the big picture in mind. Everyone has an interesting story to tell. Train yourself to find inspiration even when it seems there's none.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

None, yet. I can always find an interesting angle and think of ways to get at least one story, if not many from a source.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That the environmental reporting is less important than politics and business.
