Introduction Diatoms are a highly diverse class of algae, including possibly > 250 genera and over 100 000 species that are found in virtually every aquatic and wet environment (Falciatore & Bowler, 2002). Recent findings have shown that few diatoms are cosmopolitan, but that several highly abundant diatom genera show world-wide distributions, with local diversifications to a specific environmental niche (Malviya et al., 2016).
