Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, all through elementary school and part of high school. I can still remember typing up a 2,000-word essay on Senate reform...twice.

How is social media changing news?

It's faster but less careful. More reactive but less thoughtful. Useful, but dangerous.

What's your favorite social network?

The one at the trailhead.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

It's harder to stand out these days, but words still matter. Be original. Offer something that can't be found everywhere else.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Unfortunately, those come in a lot. Some assignments are just a bummer, but ask yourself: is this something you'd read?

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Perched on a bike seat, road-tripping somewhere sweet, likely not crafting a tweet.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

News/the world around me: New York Times. Sports: the Athletic. MTB: bike (RIP).
