Interview

How is social media changing news?

We can more easily access immediate information from law enforcement and find opinions or reactions to events.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Vic Sage.

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to help develop the national conversation and keep readers informed of what occurs both home and abroad.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was the op-ed editor, reviewing and approving thought pieces on topics about school events.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Learn to integrate data since editors will do so and increasingly make decisions on stories based on that information.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

An electric car battery company brought my attention to the widespread effects and impacts their industry can have on politics.

What's your favorite drink?

Irish Breakfast Tea with a heavy splash of milk.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Walking my dog, reading fiction, catching up on news in other verticals, or watching one of the various sports teams I follow.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

New York Times

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Readers often dismiss foreign affairs stories because they don't see the direct effects on their daily lives, often to their detriment.
