Abstract Pongamia pinnata (Linn.) Pierre, also called Millittia pinnata or Indian beach, is a fast-growing legume tree that has gained considerable attention for its potential as a feedstock for biofuel. In this study, we assessed the growth characteristics and carbon sequestering potential of Pongamia grown under sub-tropical environments.

What made you want to pursue a career in plant sciences? An internal drive for explanations and interest in things occurring in nature, coupled with the people I met along the way. I grew up in postwar, suburban West-Berlin (Lankwitz suburb) and had a little garden. My grandparents had a canary bird that unfortunately died, which we buried in that garden. After a few weeks, new plants started to grow from the grave because the bird had seeds in its stomach, which germinated.
