So many great choices, but my current nominations are: Title Character not featured (3 points) which should be an interesting challenge; Short Lived Series (2 points) because I live in hope this can be done someday; and Cartoons/Animated Series (1 point) although maybe that can be saved for one of the bleaker winter months to make it more fun.

No-one has objected to honouring John Romita Sr in July, and bumping "Railways" to August. I think that we can now ignore any votes for "Artist Homage" in this ballot, and just look at the other themes people have picked. By my reckoning, raising 2nd and 3rd place votes to 1st and 2nd where appropriate, that means the votes to date are follows.
A Cover A Day: Nominations, Themes and Statistics
If I may, I'll update the list of possible future themes to incorporate a few newly-suggested topics. The ballot paper now includes the following: Month-Number based (1-12 in Jan-Dec 2024). Use any rationale you like for picking a cover (number of characters, issue number, publication date, number featured on the cover, etc). Could be extended beyond 12 if it's sufficiently popular/successful.

Apologies for not being here yesterday; last night we were out watching a Tina Turner tribute act. I see that there's been a couple of "Sheena-Queen of the Jungle" covers posted recently. Following the sad demise of the late, great Ms Turner, I've been reading a number of obituaries about her in the last week. As you'll know she was born Anna Mae Bullock, but Ike, her manager and husband, told her to rename herself Tina, because it rhymed with Sheena and he was a huge Queen of the Jungle fan.

Ok, how about this for an idea. We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day. This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent. What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme. I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".

I've now posted the companion thread (click here to view the thread, or here to go to its last reply). I don't think this new thread necessarily needs to be pinned. It would probably be sufficient if Steve copied the above link or links into the top-of-page introduction to the current thread, so we can find it easily. He can also delete the index from this thread (and breathe a sigh of relief that he no longer needs to maintain it), as I've put the index in the new thread.

^^^ This inspired me to do some more research. The 1958 Disney film was called Tonka; it was based on the 1951 novel Comanche by David Appel. I found an image of the book's cover online. The Disney film was released in December 1958, as was the Dell comic book adaptation of that film.

Steve W said: I hesitate to suggest this (it's always unwise to volunteer!), but... If I set the thread up, I can move the index over to the new thread, and take the job of maintaining it off Steve's hands. I'd suggest that, once the new thread is set up, he deletes the index from the top-of-page comment here, and replaces it with a link to the new thread. Would that be okay with everyone? And what should we call the new thread? "Cover A Day Themes"?

"Four figures (including the two children) are not identified." Funny, I've never thought about those kids before (and, no, I don't know who they're supposed to be, either). I also cannot identify the guy standing behind Saturn Girl with his arm raised but, from his placement in the crowd and his collar, I suspect he's one of the LSH.

25th May. 24 assorted friends and associates (including the three founding members of the Legion of Super-Heroes) bidding farewell to the Man of Steel. It's not easy to count the figures saying goodbye, so here's an enlargement of the relevant part of the cover. According to the GCD, the group includes Curt Swan, Murphy Anderson, Jenette Kahn and Julius Schwartz representing DC, as well as various of Superman's Earth-1 friends.
A Cover a Day
22nd May. The GCD lists 22 characters appearing on this wrap-round cover for Legion of Super-Heroes #100. However, I think this is incorrect. They list Element Lad and Monstress, neither of whom seem to be present (the snakelike Legionnaire is Sensor), and they don't list Saturn Girl, who is definitely there. So I reckon that this is a 21-character cover, including Brainiac's pet Koko, but excluding the 2½ tiny figures in the background on the right. So, I need one more character to make 22.
List of Super-Heroes & Super-Villains That Are "Captain" Something
Personally, I would count Captai Hook as a villain, but not a super-villain. Piossibly an arbitrary decision, I'll admit. I've avoided adding any chracter called simply "The Captain" for the pedantic and possibly silly reason that it's a list of characters called "Captain 'Something'", and so "The Captain" doesn't qualify.

I thought about using this cover for "Four" but when i actually looked it up, I realized there were many more people (14 by my count), on the roofs and in the rooms behind the windows. What makes this on a little "iffy" is that some people in the building are clearly delineated, but others may be window glare. Coloring matters, too (I am using FF OMNI v1 as reference), and this image, like yesterday's Mister Miracle) isn't a great cut, but I think there are 14 total.

"If it’s a challenge how about..." Good job! Spider-Man #131 was one of the two I had in mind. And you found three! "I have three weddings ready to go for tomorrow." I hope I'm not about to steal one of them. This is the other wedding cover I had in mind... ...the last of my "twelves"... however, if you want to include Darkseid's shadow, consider it the first of my "thirteens." : Well, crap.

I thought I’d share this cover which I had originally intended to post for today. It is for a reprinted Atomic Knights story although they are nowhere to be seen on the cover. It has ten cave people fighting. As I was about to post it I noticed that there were also people in the building on the right. Okay, I’ll just save it for another day, once I got up to 25 people in the building, I realized I’d probably have to wait until May 35th. Maybe in an alternate timeline. Joe Kubert art:

"Not to be picky, but..." Well, perhaps I'll be a little bit picky. Covers are supposed to be additive, so that, for example, on the 17th you can post a reply that includes one cover with 8 characters and another with 9 to make the count correct. If you've got three covers with 7 characters, they should go in separate replies on the 7th, or in a single reply on 21st. So, for example, here's a multi-cover reply for 7th May.

American Eagles... Also, a reminder about how next month's "Strength in Numbers" theme is supposed to work. Each post's covers should include the same number of characters as the day number of the month. So, a single cover featuring just one character on May 1st; Either one cover featuring two characters, or two covers each with a single character on May 2nd; and so on. Aim to use as few covers as possible each day.

The List of American (U.S.A.) Patriotic Super-Heroes
I've probably missed a bunch of obvious ones, but these are the ones that I've found so far.

Most of the current contributors to this discussion have either voted on future themes, or indicated that they're abstaining this time round. The results seem clear enough that there's no need to wait for any more votes, as there aren't enough other potential voters to make a significant difference to the result.

1. Horses, Centaurs, and Mules (Because it's also the name of my lawyers) 2. Railways 3. Specific geographical locations: real-world cities (excluding NYC), states, provinces, and so forth Also, yeah, I have almost no idea what this is, but it's winged.

I don't think anyone else has voted since Steve submitted his ballot here (to the list of suggestions given here). Pour encourager les autres, here's my ballot, with 3 points for 1st place, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd. "vs Mother Nature" - 3 pts (battles against weather, living trees etc) "Horses/Mules/Centaurs etc" - 2 pts "Railways" - 1 pt I would like to try some of the multi-month numeric ideas, but possibly running through a year from January rather than starting now.

"I think it might be better to wait until we've seen how well "Strength in Numbers" works before we commit to doing the same sort of thing for a whole year." Agreed. I just wanted to put it out there. "Perhaps... (... wait until the beginning of 2024, as Jeff was originally intending)?" Correct. Often, by the end of the month, I worry about not having enough days left to get all my covers posted.

I think it might be better to wait until we've seen how well "Strength in Numbers" works before we commit to doing the same sort of thing for a whole year. Perhaps have at least a couple of months after May before starting (or wait until the beginning of 2024, as Jeff was originally intending)? As a slightly similar alternative, I had considered suggesting the digits 0 to 9 as the themes for ten successive months.

I have a few of the collected editions of the Modesty Blaise newspaper strips that Titan books published. I enjoy the strips, but I'm much more a fan of the (non-graphic) novels and short-story collections in which she also appeared. These give a much greater depth of character to Modesty and all her friends than is possible in the comic strips. They're written by Peter O'Donnell, who created the character, and wrote every one of her newspaper strips.

Dick Tracy Weekly stopped publication with #99, just as the infamous "Moon era" was getting under way. I think the Moon era was unfairly maligned. Yes, it was a mistake to abandon strictly Earth-bound adventures for science-fantasy, but the police procedural aspect of the strip was as sharp as ever. Whenever I read the Moon era strips, I reimagine them slightly as follows.

Reprints of Dick Tracy began appearing in comic books early on, first in b&W "Feature Books," then later in a long-running series of four-color comics published first by Dell (#1-24), then by Harvey (#25-145). The stories after the point Harvey stopped became known among fans as the "unreprinted" stories (not "unprinted" as Blackthorne would have it).

Just had Blackthorne had a stapled and and a square-bound series of 1940s stories, so too did they have stapled and square-bound series of 1930s series. Dick Tracy Special ("The Origins of a Famous Detective") featured the very first Dick Tracy story, except each panel was a full page. Whereas I was against the "NEW Larger Panels" format of the Reuben series, I kinda liked this approach... at least in theory.

Watchmen after Nexus
A couple of years ago, I spotted a similar homage to Alan Moore (or copy-cat, or example of great minds thinking alike) in a most unlikely place. It was an issue of The Beano, a British kids' comic whose target readership is probably about 8 to 10 years old. In the comic's Bash Street Kids strip, the kids and their teacher found a greenhouse that they'd never noticed before in the grounds of their school.

The last few lines of the index now look like this. Feb 2023 1596/1 Doctors, Nurses and Hospitals 24 292 Mar 2023 1620/5 Detectives & Murder Mysteries Apr 2023 Birds and Winged Creatures May 2023 Strength in Numbers Perhaps surprisingly, February's theme comes quite a long way down the table of number of responses. With 292 replies, it's in 20th equal position, 19 other themes having a higher count. It's level with "MST3K" from September 2020. Of course, February is a short month.
