Virtual Panel - AI in the Trenches: How Developers Are Rewriting the Software Process
AI tools accelerate development when paired with strong context and validation. They work best when teams provide clear structure and verify results with tests and human review. AI is changing the role of developers: from authors to orchestrators. Instead of writing code line by line, developers increasingly manage AI output, introducing new architectural concerns such as “context engineering” to keep generative agents within constraints. Developer onboarding is faster, but with limitations.
Key Lessons from Shipping AI Products Beyond the Hype
Transcript Calçado: I'm Phil. I have spent the last three years working deeply into product building with generative AI. Many of the things that we've learned during this process, became a series of articles, that then got to presentations, and various different things.
The After Party: Refactoring After 100x Hypergrowth
Transcript Calçado: My name is Phil. I've given talks at a few different QCons and other conferences about various topics, but mostly microservices. That's what I've been working with. That's what I've been around in terms of community, technology, process, everything, for the better part of the last 10 years. When thinking about microservices, there's different stages of growth and understanding as an industry of where we've been. I think probably now, we're late stage microservices.
Pattern: Service Mesh
Since their first introduction many decades ago, we learnt that distributed systems enable use cases we couldn’t even think about before them, but they also introduce all sorts of new issues. When these systems were rare and simple, engineers dealt with the added complexity by minimising the number of remote interactions. The safest way to handle distribution has been to avoid it as much as possible, even if that meant duplicated logic and data across various systems.
Calçado's Microservices Prerequisites
When you decide to adopt microservices, you are explicitly moving away from having just one or a few moving pieces to a more complex system. In this new world, the many moving parts act in unpredictable ways as teams and services are created, changed, and destroyed continuously.
