CA-IV-directed small-molecule shuttle enables targeted brain delivery of biologics
Abstract The blood−brain barrier (BBB) presents a challenge for central nervous system (CNS) therapies. Receptor-mediated transcytosis offers a solution, but existing receptor targets are ubiquitous across CNS and peripheral tissues, causing unintended exposure. We identified carbonic anhydrase IV (CA-IV) as a brain-enriched receptor enabling engineered viral capsids to cross the BBB. However, it is unclear whether CA-IV can also mediate non-viral delivery.
The Smile of the Sphinx
In an age when all those governing were in danger—there’s no point in explaining the nature of the threat, because all such threats have both too many sources and none at all—the ruler of this particular country was plagued with anxiety and insomnia. It wasn’t that he felt threatened “from below”—from his people—no, the menace came from above, from unspoken demands and directives that he believed he had to follow even though he didn’t know what they were.
The Welder by Ingeborg Bachmann, translated by Philip Boehm & Tess Lewis
Ingeborg Bachmann, translated by Philip Boehm & Tess Lewis The men collected their tools and loaded them onto the cart. Then Brunner and Maunz put the construction-site sign back in its proper place and hung up the warning light. Reiter just stood there, holding his safety goggles and squinting into the dusk. At that moment, the streetlamps flickered on but without effect because it was not yet dark enough; their shimmering flecks dissolved into the air toward the Floridsdorf Bridge.
Herta Müller, The Art of Fiction No. 225
Interviewed by Philip Boehm In awarding Herta Müller the 2009 Nobel Prize for literature, the Swedish Academy praised the author “who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed.” This is a landscape with which she is all too familiar. Müller was born in 1953 in Nitzkydorf, a small Germanspeaking village in the Romanian Banat.
Requiem for Weimar: On Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz’s Berlin Shuffle
Philip Boehm Considers the Contemporary Relevance of a Tale of 1920s Germany Berlin in the late 1920s was home not only to the flourishing nightlife we know from Cabaret—it was also a leading center of science, architecture, technology, and the fine arts. While Brecht and Weill’s Threepenny Opera was breaking box office records, Albert Einstein was presenting his paper on unified field theory to the Prussian Academy of Sciences.
Shuttle HAT for mild alkene transfer hydrofunctionalization - Nature Communications
Abstract Hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from a metal-hydride is a reliable and powerful method for functionalizing unsaturated C–C bonds in organic synthesis. Cobalt hydrides (Co–H) have garnered significant attention in this field, where the weak Co–H bonds are most commonly generated in a catalytic fashion through a mixture of stoichiometric amounts of peroxide oxidant and silane reductant.
Rhodium‐Catalyzed Anti‐Markovnikov Transfer Hydroiodination of Terminal Alkynes**
Graphical Abstract We report a shuttle approach for the Rh-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov hydroiodination of terminal alkynes to vinyl iodides. For aliphatic alkynes, a ligand- and substrate-dependent stereodivergence is observable. The vinyl iodides are engaged in a variety of C−C and C−X bond-forming reactions. The method is used to shorten a synthetic sequence to a cis-fatty acid. Deuterium-labeling and stoichiometric experiments give insights into the mechanism.
His cousin's long-lost book was a poignant surprise for Minn.'s former U.S. Sen. Rudy Boschwitz
One day last March, former U.S. Sen. Rudy Boschwitz opened his Wall Street Journal to find a review of a book that had been written by his cousin Ulrich. His cousin, who he hadn't known was a writer. His cousin, who had died in 1942. "I was startled when it appeared," Rudy said. "I had never heard that Ulrich was a writer." Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz turned 15 in 1930, the year that Rudy was born.
The Passenger
As soon as he was back in his apartment, he asked the maid if Herr Findler was already there. She said he was, so Silbermann hastily took off his hat and coat and stepped into the study, where his visitor was waiting. Theo Findler was examining a painting with clear disapproval. When he heard the door open, he quickly turned around and smiled at the man entering. “Well?” he asked, knitting his brow as he always did when he spoke, thinking that the wrinkles added weight to his words.
Catalytic Carbochlorocarbonylation of Unsaturated Hydrocarbons via C−COCl Bond Cleavage**
Abstract Here we report a palladium-catalysed difunctionalisation of unsaturated C−C bonds with acid chlorides. Formally, the C−COCl bond of an acid chloride is cleaved and added, with complete atom economy, across either strained alkenes or a tethered alkyne to generate new acid chlorides. The transformation does not require exogenous carbon monoxide, operates under mild conditions, shows a good functional group tolerance, and gives the isolated products with excellent stereoselectivity.
Palladium‐Catalyzed Decarbonylative Iodination of Aryl Carboxylic Acids Enabled by Ligand‐Assisted Halide Exchange
Abstract We report an efficient and broadly applicable palladium-catalyzed iodination of inexpensive and abundant aryl and vinyl carboxylic acids via in situ activation to the acid chloride and formation of a phosphonium salt. The use of 1-iodobutane as iodide source in combination with a base and a deoxychlorinating reagent gives access to a wide range of aryl and vinyl iodides under Pd/Xantphos catalysis, including complex drug-like scaffolds.
Nickel-Catalyzed Reversible Functional Group Metathesis between Aryl Nitriles and Aryl Thioethers
Aryl nitriles and aryl thioethers are often found in biologically active molecules such as natural products, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and agrochemicals. (1−4) Notably, these two functional groups are complementary in terms of their reactivity and directing ability for aromatic functionalization chemistry. The CN group is a traditional electron-withdrawing group that deactivates an aromatic ring and directs electrophilic aromatic substitution to the meta position.

Rachel’s Reads - September 2021
When I was quite small, I stumbled across a copy of Edith Hamilton’s Mythology and became absolutely enthralled with the world of Greek mythology. From there, I tore through every anthology about the myths of Ancient Greece that I could get my hands on.
Stereodivergent Allylation of Azaaryl Acetamides and Acetates by Synergistic Iridium and Copper Catalysis
We report stereodivergent allylic substitution reactions of allylic esters with prochiral enolates derived from azaaryl acetamides and acetates to form products from addition of the enolates at the most substituted carbon of an allyl moiety with two catalysts, a chiral metallacyclic iridium complex and a chiral bisphosphine-ligated copper(I) complex, which individually control the configuration of the electrophilic and nucleophilic carbon atoms, respectively.
CHASING THE KING OF HEARTS
Polish writer Krall transmutes the real experience of a Holocaust survivor into an emotionally bleached yet devastating account of where love can take us. In a shockingly matter-of-fact tone, Krall (The Woman from Hamburg and Other True Stories, 2005, etc.) recounts the horrors of Jewish suffering during World War II in brief chapters and a terse narrative voice: “Shayek leaves to fetch his sisters but comes back without them. They committed suicide, after poisoning little Szymus.
Herta Müller, The Art of Fiction No. 225
The critic Fredric Jameson died at the age of ninety on September 22, 2024, a little more than a year after the first of the three conversations that form the basis of the text below. In spite of Jameson’s years, the news came as something of a shock, given the productivity he kept up into his tenth decade.

Müller was born in 1953 in Nitzkydorf, a small Germanspeaking village in the Romanian Banat. After World War I and the breakup of the AustroHungarian Empire, the region came under the control of an enlarged Kingdom of Romania.
