Letter: Piracy within the public trust
In 2022, Tom Horne was re-elected as AZ Superintendent of Public Instruction. In his taxpayer-funded TV commercials supporting private education, he has unilaterally re-named his position as AZ Superintendent of Instruction. Scoundrel? Seems the voters have been duped. Further, the Heritage Foundation Project 2025 has shone the light on Horne as a model for the future in the U.S. As a product of private education myself and a long-time supporter of CTSO, I am not against private education.
Letter: Vanessa Listens
Vanessa Listens I have known Steve Christy personally for more than 30 years. Yet, I am voting for Vanessa Bechtol for District 4 County Supervisor. Steve’s political ads say: “I love being your supervisor.” Yes, it is always about Steve—not about the needs and interests of his constituents in the sprawling, gerrymandered District 4. Years ago, I requested Steve’s help for a local nonprofit.
Local opinion: County Attorney expertise - skillset vs. political network
The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer: Many readers have noticed the immense number of letters to the Star regarding the race for County Attorney. Early voting has already started. Many of my longtime friends support Laura Conover’s quest for change and more sensitivity.
Letter: Free Press
A Free Press Interesting dialog in the NY Times this morning about Donald Trump’s admiration for “strong leaders” like Victor Orban of Hungary and Vladimir Putin of Russia. In the dialog, the Times bureau chief for East and Central Europe, Andrew Higgins, says that Orban’s Hungary is not as much a police state like Russia or Belarus, but a “propaganda state,” without a free press. He notes that Russia, of course, is also a propaganda state.
Local opinion: Hamas' immoral behavior - and Israel's
The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer: Amidst the tragic news of the “war” between Hamas and Israel, it was truly encouraging to read the letters to the Star on Sunday from Debra Stuckgold, Flora Frederick, Dan Prendergast, and John Bingham. Kudos to the writers for their exceptional understanding of world events, and to the Star for its dedication to journalism in printing them. What the Hamas operatives did on October 7 was immoral and, yes Flora (letter writer), stupid.
