American democracy is on the ballot. We can't look away.
As America approaches the November elections, from Long Island to communities across our nation, we face a question f bs hsfbufs uibo xijdi qpmjujdbm qbsuz dpouspmt Dpohsftt: Xibu ljoe pg dpvousz bsf xf cfdpnjoh, boe xibu ljoe pg dpvousz xjmm xf mfbwf pvs dijmesfo? Affordability debate: Make school meals free for all students to lower cost of living
From the white sand beaches of Nassau County to the luxurious mansions of the Hamptons, Long Island is often seen as a land of only riches. Yet for many, reality is far more complex. As a lifelong resident of Long Island, I’ve witnessed firsthand how the rising cost of living strains our community. Reflecting on my own experience as a single father raising young twins, I deeply understand the challenges working families face every day.
Hateful graffiti in Central Islip is another harmful attack on immigrants
As a lifelong resident of Brentwood and the first Latino deputy speaker in the history of the New York State Assembly, I am outraged by the recent hateful attack on our immigrant community in Central Islip. The appearance of words encouraging violence against migrants, in bright yellow spray paint on a major roadway in Central Islip, evokes painful memories of an era of segregation and bigotry on Long Island that we had hoped ended decades ago.
Harold Levy, an educational Robin Hood who helped the city that raised him
In a moment when the search for heroism and courage in our leaders is ever more elusive, comes the inspiring tale of a true New York public servant. As Harold Levy – the champion of underprivileged students, the man who stood up to Rudy Giuliani and won him over – faces his mortality, he is the profile in courage we need now. From humble beginnings in Washington Heights as the only son of Holocaust refugees, he achieved greatness in the largest public education system in the world.
Albany’s Frankenstein: How the school aid formula became unrecognizable
Months before Cynthia Nixon, the actor and education activist, announced her candidacy for governor on Twitter, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was passionately making a case for educational equity. “We must address education funding inequities and dedicate more of our state school aid to poorer districts,” he demanded during his State of the State address to the applause of lawmakers.
New York keeps shortchanging poor students
As state leaders enter the final stages of negotiating the fiscal year 2018-2019 budget, education aid is likely to be one of the main sticking points. If past is prologue, total education spending in the adopted budget will exceed the amount in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive budget. But will the adopted budget include reforms to target aid where it is needed most? The executive budget school aid proposal is $26.4 billion for the 2018-2019 school year – an increase of $769 million or 3 percent.
Could the long-stalled state DREAM Act finally advance this year?
As the national debate rages about the DREAM Act, the New York state version is back in the spotlight as well. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has included it as an education priority in his executive budget, and the Assembly has included the bill in its budget resolution as well. Supporters hope this will finally be the year that the bill passes as part of the budget. The New York DREAM Act was first introduced in the state Legislature in 2013, with state Sen.
To combat racism, fund needy schools
When I was a child in the 1960s, racism was in your face. Explicit racist insults were common and in some communities the Ku Klux Klan was known for cross burnings in the front yards of people of color. But today racism has gone underground and modern-day cross burnings are done with a calculator.
