Spirituality & Practice
As women’s bodily autonomy and reproductive rights continue to make headlines, Phyllis Nagy’s Call Jane arrives carrying a story with huge implications packed inside a relatively small-feeling film. With its disarmingly light approach, Call Jane takes a hot button justice issue and coolly focuses its lens on very specific people making very specific choices, allowing the political to become deeply personal.
It’s Time to Snuggle Up, Grab Some Hot Cocoa & Watch These LGBTQ+ Christmas Films!
I love Christmas time. There is a certain joy and magic that fills the air during the holiday season. The festive music, lights, snow, and classic Christmas movies guarantee you’ll get in the holiday spirit! But every holiday season I also find myself swarmed by a plethora of cheesy ‘boy meets girl and falls in love’ Christmas romance movies with little to no substance. For years I wished for a time I could watch a Christmas movie with representation for the LGBTQ+ community.

Not Easily Pleased
Early in our friendship, I made the mistake of telling Patricia Highsmith that I loved Hitchcock’s adaptation of her first novel, Strangers on a Train. I wasn’t sure the friendship would survive the night. That it did survive, for nearly a decade until her death, is probably due to the liberal amount of beer we drank that evening, and to her tolerance for opposing points of view. Pat believed that Hitchcock betrayed her novel’s themes and intent.
The Bottom Line
By Nick Kazan • 20 Aug, 2019 • Do you know why we negotiate with the AMPTP rather than with individual studios? It wasn't what the studios requested. The WGA insisted on it. The Guild didn't want writers working at Disney and Fox while other writers were on strike for nine months at Paramount. The burden always had to be borne equally. Everyone out of work at the same time...otherwise there would be problems. We're doing things differently now.
Dissent is Not Disloyalty
The first obligation of our Guild is to safeguard the interests of its most at risk members — to ensure that the sacrifices leadership asks us to take do not disadvantage the vulnerable or favor, however inadvertently, our more privileged union brethren. That is what my father, a 40-year union man and proud shop steward, who walked the picket lines against Ma Bell, taught me.
An Open Letter from Writers on the September 2019 WGA Election
Signatories are listed below. Add your name! As members of the Writers Guild of America, we firmly believe that many agency practices are in need of major reform. We are grateful to the present leadership for bringing these matters to the fore. And we believe this present situation is best resolved in a negotiating room and not in a courtroom.

The Scarlet Letter
Heather Pattengale, Christopher Hunt Photo by Trudie Lee February 26 - March 23, 2019 By Phyllis Nagy Adapted from the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne It is 1642 and Hester Prynne has been branded an adulterer by her Puritan village and forced to wear the titular scarlet letter as repentance. However, in this modern adaptation, Hester is unashamed of her actions and proudly subverts society’s rigid standards put upon women to be virtuous and good.

"Carol" is the Lesbian-Centric Christmas Movie of My Dreams
Home › Articles › Screen › "Carol" is the Lesbian-Centric Christmas Movie of My Dreams Screenqueerlesbian Carol—or, as I like to call it, Sexual Tension: The Movie—is a wonderful and all-too-rare film. The story, which began as Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 lesbian pulp fiction novel The Price of Salt, follows a clandestine love affair between two women living in Manhattan.
A sublimely crafted love story
Todd Haynes’ 2002 film Far from Heaven was a melodramatic homage to Douglas Sirk’s sweeping, nearly camp 1950s domestic dramas like Imitation of Life and All that Heaven Allows. While Far from Heaven certainly works on its own terms – Julianne Moore’s forbidden romance with Dennis Haysbert is archly gorgeous – it was hard not to think of it as much more than an artistic exercise in adulation. His remake of Mildred Pierce for HBO was a similar thing, just more expensive and less necessary.

2016 Oscar Predictions: PART 2
This category seems to have a few surefire bets, but there is the chance for some unexpected nominations as well. Unlike in previous years, there doesn’t seem to be a clear frontrunner at this time. Sylvester Stallone, Creed: Could the original Rocky pull another upset? Fans and critics alike have loved Creed, in which Stallone returns to play Rocky Balboa for the seventh(!!) time. He’s already received a Golden Globe nomination for the role, and let’s face it, everyone secretly loves Rocky.
Carol review: The rare film that could probably be just as engrossing completely still
Writing Credit: Phyllis Nagy, based on the book The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith You would swear, after watching Carol, that Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett are the last two surviving members of some ancient tribe that communicated solely with longing glances. In Todd Haynes’ film, more happens between the two of them just sitting in a booth waiting for lunch to arrive than most others manage in the full two hours.
