Architecture has the capacity to reset the environmental balance within highly charged settings. The recently completed Grimes Engineering Center does precisely that for UC Berkeley’s campus. It marks the assertive beginning of a new chapter on the campus bucolic context, opening new vistas metaphorically and factually to the educational community and its future generations. The task was clear: to construct a signature building to unify the discipline’s presence on campus.

Pierluigi Serraino Pays Tribute to the Late Chuck Davis, Founding Partner of EHDD
Architecture News When a principled architect passes on, that loss becomes a community matter. This is certainly the case for Charles Medley Davis, who died on May 7, 2025, at 90. Tribute: Claude Stoller (1921-2023)
A native New Yorker, architect Claude Stoller witnessed Modernism’s ascent in North America firsthand, interacting with the movement’s leading players and later designing works that exemplified its principles. His architecture was imbued with a site sensitivity rooted in the universality of Modernist ideals. He died on May 16, 2023, at 101. His formative years exposed him to pioneering pedagogy through summers spent at the Stelton Modern School in Piscataway Township, New Jersey.
A Look Back at the Work of Several Celebrated Photographers
Architecture exists in the absence of photography, but its vicarious experience through photography is the predominant way we learn about buildings and their unique attributes. Images are mobile; buildings are not. So of course, there is a correlation between the quality of the picture capturing a work of architecture and how the viewer comes to perceive it. Whoever photographs a work of architecture can make or break it, celebrate or condemn it.
