Ultrasonic Transducers for In-Service Inspection and Continuous Monitoring in High-Temperature Environments
2.6. Other Components and Transducer Assembly The transducer is composed of a 36 ∘ Y-cut lithium niobate piezoelectric crystal with a diameter of 12 mm (such that a resonant frequency is centered at around 3 MHz) and two 100 nm electrodes of platinum with a 20 nm titanium adhesion layer, which was deposited onto the piezoelectric element by physical vapor deposition; a mineral insulated wire composed of two conductors of nickel (Omega) is used to drive the transducer.
Field Notes on Design Activism
Canon-divergence Whitney M. Young, Jr.’s speech in 1968 to the American Institute Architects questioned the efficacy of design professionals’ work in “urban” environments, and to this day when you see this speech referenced, it tends to be part of a call for social change in architecture. Young was, of course, not the only non-designer who has had a transformative impact on the discipline’s concerns and processes.
No Design on Stolen Land: Dismantling Design's Dehumanising White Supremacy
Capitalism is predicated on property ownership, and particularly land. The US and Canada are premier examples of the appropriation and dispossession of land occupied by Indigenous Peoples. Pierre Bélanger and co‐founders at OPEN SYSTEMS (OPSYS) based in Boston, on traditional lands of the Massachusett Peoples, illustrate tactics of ‘undesign’ adopted in this context.
Extraction Empire
Extraction is the process and practice that defines Canada, at home and abroad. Of the nearly 20,000 mining projects in the world from Africa to Latin America, more than half are Canadian operated. Not only does the mining economy employ close to 400,000 people in Canada, it contributed $57 billion CAD to Canada’s GDP in 2014 alone. Globally, more than 75 percent of the world’s mining firms are based in Canada.
