Wired for Hybrid - Deep Dive 1 - Azure AD introduces support for IPV6
Hello Folks, Microsoft introduced support for IPv6 in our operating systems starting with Windows XP Service Pack 1 in 2002. However, it wasn't until Windows Vista in 2006 that Microsoft offered full support for IPv6. In 2011, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) allocated the last blocks of available IPv4 addresses, which triggered a greater sense of urgency to transition to IPv6, which offers a much larger address space than IPv4 and can support the continued growth of the internet.

Planning the Monitoring of my hybrid environment.
Hello folks, By now you may have read that I’ve rebuilt my demo environment to look like what a typical hybrid environment would look like. I did it slowly without having to rip and replace everything in my on-prem environment.
Securely Manage my On-prem Server Using Cloud services.
Hello folks, Lately, I had to replace my home network’s edge device\firewall with one that would allow me to connect to my Azure cloud environment using a site-to-site VPN. I set up an Azure Bastion host to enable remote access to all my servers (Azure Virtual machines and on-prem servers). And set up an end-to-end name resolution structure for on-prem and in-cloud resources.
Setting up DNS in a Hybrid Environment.
Hello Folks, I’m not sure when this became a series, but it’s looking like it’s going to be ongoing. I’m hoping it can give the community a sense of how you can slowly adopt cloud services to enhance your on-prem environment. It started a few weeks ago with the post on how I needed to replace the edge device on my home network. Then I followed up with how I now can use the site-to-site VPN I set up to access (RDP & SSH) all the servers in my environment using the Bastion host on Azure.
Connect to your on-prem server from anywhere!
Hello Folks, A few weeks ago, I wrote about upgrading my local network edge device with one capable of connecting to my Azure virtual network using a site-to-site VPN. I also mentioned that I would cover many other services and capabilities that this site-to-site VPN configuration enables for hybrid work and management.
WSL2 now available on Windows Server 2022
Hello folks! If you’re one of those Devs/ITPros using the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) you know how useful and powerful it can be. We announced during Microsoft Build last week that WSL2 will be broadly available in June. But I could not wait. Here’s how I installed it. It’s pretty simple. Check it out! Pre-Requisites First, Windows Subsystem for Linux requires Hyper-V and virtualization enabled on your computer.
AzUpdate S04E12: Passwordless, Azure Key Vault, Azure Functions and Microsoft Authenticator
Hello Folks, Well, I’m back this week after my first in-person event in over 2 years!!! OMG, it was wonderful to sit in a large room with like-minded people discussing tech in a fun open, and respectful environment. I was at the PowerShell Summit in Seattle, and it was great. You’ll be able to see all the content from that event on their YouTube channel soon. However, I saw the episode last week and I’m not sure I can follow that up. Amy (@wyrdgirl) and Shannon (@shankuehn) did a fantastic job.
Azure Backup Monitoring and Alerting
Hello Folks, If you’ve had to manage the backup\restore processes for your environment, you know how important keeping up with the status of said process. No one wants to end up having to recover a VM from an incomplete/failed backup. To address this, the Azure Backup product Team have added new integrations with Azure Monitor and its alerting capabilities. Today we’ll cover how these can help you really keep up to date with the state of your backups and restores items.

If you’ve ever had to deploy, manage, and support a workload or an application in someone else’s subscription you know the problems that come with that territory. Azure Lighthouse can help you.
Azure Monitor agent and Data Collection Rules
Oct 04 2021 11:06 PM Last week Sonia Cuff wrote about finding your Azure Log Analytics agent deployments in your environment in preparation for the Azure Monitor agent migration. This was in response to an email you might have received if you are currently using the Log Analytics Agent. We previously covered the reasons behind the need for a new agent. But the reason for today’s article is to explore a bit the DCR or Data Collection Rules.

Managing Demo environment with Managed Disk Snapshot
Sep 28 2021 12:09 AM Hello folks, I have been doing some setups for demos on migrating VM to Azure. In good “cooking show” fashion I needed to have my environment ready to be reset so I can run the demo again. Well, instead of redeploying the entire environment I decided to use VM snapshots to help me out. Turns out it was a lot faster than re-deploying and very easy to setup. NOTE: This is not a new feature. This has been available since early 2020.
It’s up to you to lead the hybrid future: New Hybrid certification arrives this December
Hello Folks, There have been many questions regarding the lack of updated Microsoft Windows certification exams in the last year or so. Considering the fact that there are approximately 2.2 million professionals on LinkedIn with Windows Server in their job role description and 800 thousand professionals that certified on Windows Server since 2012, we knew we had to do something.
Faking DDNS with Azure Services
Jun 03 2021 12:00 AM Hello folks, Since the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve all been mostly stuck to our home offices. And since I’ve been concentrating of the hybrid services that Azure can provide I setup a simulated on-prem environment at home with left-over desktop, laptops, and Raspberry PI. It’s been really cool and useful.
SecretManagement and accessing Linux VMs in Azure
Apr 20 2021 12:24 AM Hello folks, A couple weeks ago I wrote about how I leveraged PowerShell SecretManagement to generalize a demo environment. In that article I only talked about Windows virtual machines running in Azure. However, my colleague Thomas Maurer revisited the topic in his article, Stop typing PowerShell credentials in demos using PowerShell SecretManagement.
Leveraging PowerShell SecretManagement to generalize a demo environment
Apr 07 2021 11:57 PM Hello Folks, I’ve been working with some colleagues on a shared demo environment, and one issue came up during a session with customers that highlighted a problem. If any of us change the local admin password of the servers or redeploys the environment with a password of their own. We no longer can access it without contacting the group and request the new password.
Leverage PowerShell History across multiple machines
Hello Folks, If you have not seen the content our team has put together for our “ITOpsTalks: All things Hybrid” online event? You can still watch all the sessions online. To the point of today’s post. During the OPS117: PowerShell Deep dive session Joey Aiello and Jason Helmick introduced us to Predictive IntelliSense otherwise known as PSReadLine. PSReadLine replaces the command line editing experience of PowerShell PSReadLine and up. It provides: Syntax coloring. Simple syntax error notification.
Mount Blob storage on Linux VM NFS 3.0
Hello Folks! Not so long ago I was working on an internal project that required me to deploy Linux VMs that were hosting a workload that saved a copy of any number of video live feeds to blob storage for safeguard and for future replays. I also needed it to be mounted automatically when the VM was created. I know that are several ways to map storage in a VM.
OPS117: PowerShell Deep Dive
Pierre Roman, Joey Aiello (Senior Program Manager - General Compute) and Jason Helmick (Program Manager – PowerShell), will take a deep dive on PowerShell. From previous versions and making them work in PowerShell 7 and PowerShell Core. We'll also take a serious look at Learning PowerShell with PowerShell, at Predictive IntelliSense, at the VS Code extensions, Crescendo, and secret management with PowerShell to avoid the ever-annoying problem of hardcode creds or use prompts.
How to Protect your Azure blob storage from accidental deletion
I know this not a new feature, but this saved my proverbial behind earlier this week. I was cleaning out demo subscriptions and resource groups that I’m no longer using or that need to be reset for new demos. Well… It did not take long for me to pick one that I needed to keep and hit the “Delete resource group”. And like any situation where you know you’ve screwed up. I knew the second I saw the notification. Turns out this Resource Group was where stored all the recorded demos I regularly use….
Log Analytics Workspace Design Gotchas
Hello Folks, Lately I’ve had a few conversations regarding Log Analytics workspace design. More specifically, questions like: Do I create one central workspace with all data? Should I create one workspace per application? Should each team have their own workspace? Design conundrum Figuring out how many workspaces, you need is determined by one or more of the following requirements: Which region do you need to store the data; do you have data sovereignty or compliance issues we need to comply with?
Hybrid management. Where do I start?
Hello Folks, We live in a cloud world. That is clear... However, most of us in the REAL world know that we’ll have to manage and maintain our servers on-prem or in multiple clouds for the foreseeable future. Therefore, it’s imperative that we find the right management solution to allow us to manage and maintain ALL our machines regardless of where they live. Azure, On-prem or other clouds.
Set up Azure Shell on a local network
Hello Folks, In my last post I discussed how you can run the managed image that the Azure Cloud Shell is based on locally. It allows you to leverage the Azure Shell managed environment without being subject to the limitations of the real Azure Cloud Shell. Following that post, someone said to me, “You forgot that online you can use code (Cloud Shell editor)”. Well. Yes and no… Let me elaborate… No, you cannot use the same Code version in the shell.
How to setup and run Azure Cloud Shell locally
Hello folks, Lately I’ve been building and tearing down complete environments in Azure to test and record demos. To do that I’ve been using a combination of PowerShell scripts, ARM templates and AzureCLI scripts in the Azure Cloud Shell. Some of those scripts require a significant amount of time to run. (especially the ones with gateways).
Creating a traditional Windows Server Failover Cluster in Azure
Hello Folks, As we announced last month (Announcing the general availability of Azure shared disks and new Azure Disk Storage enhancements) Azure shared disks are now generally available. Shared disks, is the only shared block storage in the cloud that supports both Windows and Linux-based clustered or high-availability applications.
One Ops Question: What are Azure Blueprints?
In this episode of One Ops Question, Steven Murawski answers the question "What are Azure Blueprints?" The cloud can be a scary, wide-open space. Azure Blueprints helps bring structure to your enterprise's use of Azure subscriptions with RBAC, Azure Policy, and Resource Manager Templates in a versionable artifact.
Are skills like deploying, designing, and maintaining servers on prem now redundant in the cloud?
05-10-2020 12:01 AM I started out in my IT career 14 years or more ago and my skill set was built up from designing, deploying and maintaining servers on-prem, and I loved it. However, over the last two or three years, I've transferred over to using Cloud solutions, primarily Azure and I've found a lot of my skill set is still relevant. Between you and your Cloud provider, there is a shared responsibility model.
What are the Differences Between Azure Active Directory and Azure Active Directory Domain Services?
I met with some customers last week, and we had a great conversation about Active Directory and the differences between all the flavours available to them when adopting a hybrid posture. More specifically, what are the difference between: Azure Active Directory (AAD) Azure Active Directory Domain Services (AADDS) Active Directory (AD) It's essential to understand the differences when you’re looking at a “lift-and-shift” scenario from on-prem to IaaS.
Connecting Azure Shell in the new Windows Terminal (Preview)
Lately, I’ve been a real fan of 2 ways of managing my Azure resources: number one, the new Window Terminal (Preview) and number 2, the Azure Cloud Shell. Now there is a way to combine the two. Last weekend (August 2nd) an announcement was made in regards to the new Windows Terminal Preview v0.3 Release. The newest version of the preview has, among other improvements, a new connector that allows you to connect to the Azure Cloud Shell within the Terminal.
What is the difference between Azure Application Gateway, Load Balancer, Front Door and Firewall?
**** Added the NSG section as per comments **** Hello folks, Last week at a conference in Toronto, an attendee came to the Microsoft booth and asked something that has been asked many times in the past. So, I decided to cover it here for everyone’s benefit. What are the differences between Azure Firewall, Azure Application Gateway, Azure Load Balancer, NSG, Azure Traffic Manager, and Azure Front Door? Here's a high-level consolidation of what they each do.

Step-By-Step: Enabling Custom Role Based Access Control in Azure
Hello Folks, During the preparation of the Ignite The Tour conference, @Neil Peterson and I along with the whole Cloud Ops Advocate team, were looking at issues that IT/Ops professionals are facing when looking at hybrid environments and migrating workloads to the cloud. One of these issues is more than a technological problem to solve. It’s a business decision that can be supported by a set of tools available in azure. I’m talking about Governance.
