How is social media changing news?
Social media has compressed the distance between a story and its audience, letting news reach people directly without passing through traditional gatekeepers. For industries like mining, that means a company's own channels now shape its narrative as much as the press does, which raises the value of accuracy and consistency. The tradeoff is speed over verification, so the burden of checking facts has shifted partly onto the reader.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Learn the sector you cover deeply enough to spot what does not add up. In industries like mining, the real story is usually in the operational detail, the contracts, the logistics, the numbers behind a claim, not the press release. Build genuine sources, verify before you publish, and stay consistent. Credibility compounds over time, and it is the one asset a journalist cannot afford to lose.
