Keras or PyTorch as your first deep learning framework
So, you want to learn deep learning? Whether you want to start applying it to your business, base your next side project on it, or simply gain marketable skills – picking the right deep learning framework to learn is the essential first step towards reaching your goal. We strongly recommend that you pick either Keras or PyTorch. These are powerful tools that are enjoyable to learn and experiment with. We know them both from the teacher’s and the student’s perspective.
Using images with CC-BY-SA license in slides or a thesis
If I am using images with a copyleft license (e.g. CC-BY-SA), each of them as a separate, properly attributed piece, does it mean that the whole work (be it slides, a thesis or a book) need to be licensed in the same way? This work uses images, so it's a derivative work and it need to bear the same license. This work is a collection. So, as long as I keep the images separate, and properly attributed/licensed, they do not affect the collection license.
x >= x pattern in JavaScript
From my investigations, is supposed to work on any kind of orderable values, not only numbers. would only work numbers. d3 was actually using at some point. This commit introduced the test: Unlike and , it doesn't make sense to return negative or positive infinity for and ; the D3 functions return the minimum value according to an arbitrary ordering, not by numeric value. Instead, the minimum or maximum of an empty array, or an array that contains only degenerate values, should always be undefined.
I'm looking for an application or workflow which integrates data into the writing process
While other answers have given some very good suggestions, I wish to focus on the part "if anyone has had this problem, and how they have solved it?" of the question. I use Sweave and can only speak for this particular method. My general thoughts are that: However, the time to make the two sets of code to work may not necessarily be shorter or less miserable than revising the statistics and tables by hand. It has some learning curve.

Is praising students' aptitude harmful?
A universal once-for-all answer to the question is impossible. There's a lot of subjectivity in here and a lot really depends on the particular student in question. In general, both praising and not-praising can potentially have their pros and cons: Positives - Given the kind of students you mention, with an undeniable possibility of stereotype threat, it is generally a good idea to have the "growth mindset" in mind, and make sure they stay interested.
Origin of scores for letters in Scrabble (in relation to their frequency in a langauge)
In Scrabble, each letter is worth a number of points. Typically, the rarer the letter, the more score it has, see Scrabble letter distribution and score. Does anyone know how these scores are being assigned? (Or modified, if needed.) Is it based on some gut-feeling, or a formula/algorithm? As I see, the score is proportional to surprisal (from information theory), i.e. \log(1/p), where p is the frequency of a given letter in a given language.
What post PhD path alternatives are there?
I am a researcher in industry, and I love it. I get to work on important problems and my work is expected to translate into real products in roughly 5-10 years. While working on my PhD, I felt that the academic mindset was overwhelming. I have never had any intention of doing anything but research in industry, but I was certainly in the minority.
English Language & Usage Stack Exchange
I use them interchangeably. kiamlaluno sees a distinction I'm not aware of; even in the specific examples he cites, I would use them interchangeably. The actual term i.e. is an abbreviation of id est in Latin, which literally means "that is". In fact, when I see i.e., I cannot help but say "that is" in my head; this helps me distinguish it from e.g. (exempli gratia, by the way).
How to list online publications (e.g. blog posting, etc.)?
I am updating my CV. As for my own publications, I have the usual sections: Journal articles Book chapters Conference proceedings I would also like to include the articles I have posted on different blogs. The question is: which heading would you use for such electronic articles? They are not really conventional, peer-reviewed articles, so frankly I don't see fair to include them under the "Journal articles" section. I saw some people use "Other publications", but I would like to be more specific.
Free web hosting for academics
I would like to have a professional academic webpage, and for different reasons, I don't want to use the website of my current workplace (mostly because due to some external factors, it's not currently possible where I work, but also because I consider changing affiliation in the future, and I'd like to avoid moving my webpage).
Calculating Diversity using normalized species counts
I am trying to calculate the change in diversity of species encountered throughout time. My dataset is comprised to detections of tagged fish for 48 consecutive weeks. My thought was to bin the detections by time intervals (weeks, two weeks, 4 weeks, etc), to look at the change in diversity of species detected over time. In addition, I think I need to normalize the species counts by the number of tagged individuals.
What is the legal status of using copyrighted images in academic/conference talks?
I am told that we can use copyrighted images in our lectures to students now as they are for purely educational purposes, as long as we correctly attribute them. That is to say there is no need to ask the permission of the copyright holders. What is the status of using copyrighted images in conference talks? Does it also count as education? As pointed out, this will depend on the country in which the talk is given. Let me restrict the question to the US and UK in that case.
Should I write a paper on open-source software I've built?
I'd like to write a paper about a specific open-source software project that I've built but I'm puzzled whether it would be appropriate to write a paper about it. After all, not many important software projects were published in the form of a publication. Edit: as a concrete example, this is one project I've built: http://lmatteis.github.io/void-graph/ - it can visualize RDF structures as a dynamic graph which can be saved in SVG and used in presentations or slides.
