Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Essentially it was the creation of planksip® as a media brand. I love every minute of this profession and our wonderful thought leaders.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, I think it was for punishment and keep me from causing more mischief.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is throttling the speed of information flow. Will consciousness keep up? Apparently not!
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Dead or Alive? Well, it would have to be Dr. Cory Elliot, a "fictional" character in my literary fiction; Will Freeman.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
An ethical journalist is, for me, the same as the singular 'journalist'.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer personal stories, written responses to books, interviews and such.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
The planksip® P.A.S.F. filter, the Gadfly and the power of Google.
What's your favorite social network?
YouTube is instrumental, reasoned the romantic critic.
Who do you wish followed you?
Sam Harris, Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, Leonard Mlodinow, Robert Sapolsky, George Steiner, Oprah Winfrey.
Why did you become a journalist?
A sustainable way to stimulate and grow my mind. What else do we have to offer the world beyond the billions of neurons between our ears?
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was out looking for my frontal cortex.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
p.(x) - a 100,000+ word masterwork of philosophy and perspectives related to Big Data Determinism and Will Freeman (Literary Fiction)
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Read, read, read, then write in a 10 to 1 ratio. Study philosophy, love philosophy, create, co-create and find your writers style and hold on.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime during the day. Pretty much. Business hour, you know be respectful of my west coast time zone.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
You wanna write a book together?
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
There are all sorts of bad ideas. At planksip® we approach a pitch like a conversation with our audience. Does the conversation break down?
What's your favorite drink?
Water
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Asleep... With the odd bathroom break and a meal I actually write, read, create on this screen. Constantly.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I enjoy John Pistelli's blog, Lapham's Quarterly, Quillette and besides that, I read, read and read. https://planksip.me/readinglist
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I am hard to understand. That's ok, I exist on the outskirts of readability but the reward is worthwhile. Slow down to the speed of planksip.
