Letter: The joy of Zumanomics - HeraldLIVE
My pension fund recently sent me a notification explaining the difficult economic times, which it was said was the reason my pension would increase by only a modest 4% a month. I have since received my monthly pension statement, which details not only the modest increase in my pension, but also an increase of 29% in my monthly tax deduction.
Letter: Emulate Khoza and leave party - HeraldLIVE
One can understand Kevin Foster’s disappointment with the mandarins of the ANC (“Ashamed of riotous behaviour”, October 4).
Letter: Bar Mugabe from country - HeraldLIVE
One can understand why the government thought it prudent to grant Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity, though not necessarily agreeing with that decision. Nevertheless, the fact remains that a South African citizen was allegedly assaulted and the government has a bounden duty to protect its citizens. Having chosen to go the diplomatic route, the government should now inform the Zimbabwean government that Grace Mugabe is persona non grata and is no longer welcome in South Africa.
Letter: Give dog abusers a thrashing - HeraldLIVE
By now, most citizens have become painfully aware that we unwittingly allowed well-meaning ideologues to undermine our system of accountable law in this country. The bleeding heart liberals who have dominated our judicial system since 1994 will guarantee that these young people who subject our animals to this barbaric practice will probably get off with minimal retribution.
Letter: Heavy-handed security in parliament not acceptable - HeraldLIVE
The last few months have been very interesting, if viewed from the sidelines. Since the ANC lost control of major municipalities, it has been thrown into a deep crevice. The assault of a Port Elizabeth metro councillor with a water jug was nothing like the efforts of security personnel in parliament last week! The “president” must be feeling very insecure to have brought in the army ahead of his state of the nation address, but he is also oblivious of the fact he is losing ground support.
Letter: Time to celebrate our diversity - HeraldLIVE
During this post-election period there has been the most amazing concentration on identity manifested largely in a debate about hair politics for schoolgirls. Writing, speaking and debating have both a political function and transformative potential. So I write with the passion of a feminist politician who has a radical commitment to equality, freedom and fairness focussed on women’s rights in the largely patriarchal, chauvinist milieu that informs South African codes of conduct.
Letter: Van Niekerk compared to Hermes
In his An Educated Guess column of August 25 (“Re-think our ideas of gender”), Jonathan Jansen takes issue with a TV commentator, in describing Wayde van Niekerk’s record-breaking run, saying, “He had wings on his feet in the last 50m”. Jansen suggests that the commentator was prejudiced and was in fact implying that “something must have assisted him to run beyond his natural ability”.
Letter: Show our views by hitting the SABC in pocket
It is obvious that those in charge of the SABC, and those who in turn are in charge of them, are obsessed with imposing their blinkered views on us and denying us unbiased news. Goebbels-like, they are deaf to reason, blind to logic and unmoved by moral and ethical values. It serves no purpose, therefore, to attempt to engage them in intelligent debate – their minds are closed. Max du Preez recently cut his ties with the SABC in protest against news and views being censored.
Letter: Jordan not loved as Motsoeneng is
When Pallo Jordan resigned his positions in the ANC following the revelations that he had been less than forthcoming about his educational qualifications, the ANC lauded him for doing the honourable thing, and quite rightly so. Now that Hlaudi Motsoeneng has been revealed to have similarly transgressed, not only is he retained as chief executive of the SABC, but public funds are to be used to contest the court ruling that his appointment is invalid.
Letter: Contrast in reactions
I CANNOT but help compare the actions of Matthew Theunissen (“Racist rant man ‘sorry’ ”, May 4) with those of Sihle Ngobese [who went to the Obz Cafe to give waitress Ashleigh Schultz her R50 tip]. Both were confronted by situations that they perceived to be unjust and biased.
Letter: Racist driver has set us back
THE actions of the mindless moron who, with race-fuelled malice, willfully bumped a motorcyclist from his delivery bike go far beyond reckless endangerment and hate speech. By filming the incident and posting it online, he not only confirmed his lack of character and intelligence, but has provided those who say that Nelson Mandela was wrong in seeking reconciliation with proof to corroborate their views.
Letter: Blind as bat too?
ISMAIL Mahomed is indisputably right to berate those whose insensitive racist comments cause offence and impair the dignity of others (“Birdwatchers out to pounce”, January 20). It beggars belief that there are those who condemn an entire group of people, because of the actions of an individual. But I could not help noticing that Mahomed is very selective in giving examples of those who have transgressed in this manner.
Letter: Uneven penalties surely not cricket
Letter: Uneven penalties surely not cricket WEST Indies cricketer Chris Gayle receives a substantial fine for inviting a female reporter out for a drink. England’s Ben Stokes tries to put local batting hero Temba Bavuma off his stroke by saying to him after he had scored yet another boundary, “You’re an absolute s**t”, and is not penalised for his foul-mouthed display of gamesmanship. This is not cricket! ;
