What was your first job as a journalist?
I was an online intern at the Rekord Newspaper in Pretoria.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. In 2006 when Computer Applications Technology, the subject, was introduced. We did not yet have computers at school.
How is social media changing news?
Everything happens on social media. The shorter, the better. Short and sweet.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
The New Republic's Stephen Glass from the movie, Shattered Glass. It is the lessons in the movie more than anything.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
A journalist is a messiah.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
When former Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi offered South Africans with the opportunity to ask him anything under #AskMmusi.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Way in advance, with all relevant information on email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Microsoft Word, WordPress, EidosMedia Mathode, Canon 500D camera.
What's your favorite social network?
I'm torn Twitter and Instagram.
Who do you wish followed you?
There are too many to just choose one. But if I have to, I would say President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Why did you become a journalist?
There is nothing as exciting as exposing the injustices in our society as well as recognising excellence.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Briefly, it was published quarterly. Besides sports, there was not much to report on. I was a reporter and journalist.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Every assignment I have been on in February 2018 for City Buzz was pure bliss.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't do it for the money!
When's the best time to pitch you?
In the afternoon between 11:00 and 14:00.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
The pitch I got once, as an intern, was to attend a soccer team's kit reveal.
What's your favorite drink?
Carling Black Label always and forever.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
A common Mzansi misconception about journalists, that we lie.
