We Can’t Let Politicians Blame Us For Their COVID-19 Failures
The pandemic’s second wave is coming to Canada this fall. In fact, with daily COVID-19 cases reaching 478 in Ontario and 489 in Quebec on Tuesday, it’s fair to say it’s already here. If previous pandemics are any indication, this wave will be deadlier than the first one. Already, political leaders and parts of the media are looking for someone to blame. If you were to listen to them, you’d get the idea that a selfish and short-sighted populace is responsible.
The Government Is Risking Our Lives By Abandoning Canadians In Iran
Despite recent closures of businesses and services across the country, for most Canadians the coronavirus is still largely an impending, rather than present, medical disaster. Though it will likely change by the time this article is published, most of us still don’t know anyone suffering from coronavirus, and are staying at home due to government advisories rather than direct threat of exposure.
Canadian Media Is Making Life Worse For Iranians
In mid-January, I was invited to CBC Radio’s “The House” program for a panel on how Iranian Canadians are reacting in the aftermath of the Flight 752 tragedy. As a critic of CBC’s Iran coverage in the past, I thought this would be a good opportunity to help change the conversation at our public broadcaster. Shortly after I agreed, it became clear the panel was an ambush. Both of the other guests had supported United States President Donald Trump’s Iran policy.
Could These Foreign Lobbyists Be Working Against Canada's Interests?
Last month, a series of revelations and actions in the Persian Gulf area rocked the world of international relations. In quick succession, a Qatari state news website was hacked, deep and broad sanctions were placed on Qatar by its neighbours (led by Saudi Arabia), and an email exchange showing coordination between repressive Gulf monarchies and a U.S.-based lobbying organization named the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) was leaked.
If America Can Vote For Obama, Canada Can Vote For Singh
Last week, Jagmeet Singh announced his intention to run for the leadership of the New Democratic Party in an electrifying rally in his home riding of Brampton, Ontario. If successful, Singh will become the first racialized leader of a major Canadian political party. Since his announcement, the question that consistently comes up in public and private conversation is whether Singh, a man with brown skin and a turban, could be elected as Prime Minister in Canada.
The World Needs An Independent Canada In The Age Of Trump
As we near the hundred-day mark of U.S. President Donald Trump's presidency, many Canadians are concerned about a shift in Trudeau's government's foreign policy. Instead of keeping the promises made by Trudeau for constructive engagement and the return of Canada as a force for peace in the world, Canadians are seeing a government which is obediently following an increasingly unstable and bellicose U.S. administration.
Tory Leadership Hopefuls Should Drop Harper's Divisive Iran Rhetoric
During a Conservative leadership debate on Feb. 19, 2017 in Vancouver, the candidates were asked the following question about Canada-Iran relations: "It is very possible that Justin Trudeau will restore relations with Iran. As leader, would you rescind this?" Unfortunately, responses from most of the concerned candidates endorsed the same failed policies of the previous federal government.
