Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I first served as a business news writer for my current company. I wrote scripts for our then-business show, Business Roundup.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Just once when I was a kid. I used it to type one word (forgot what it was) just to try it out.
How is social media changing news?
It helps journalists and media networks reach audiences much, much faster but it also amplifies the spread of disinformation, sadly.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
None at the moment, really. I don't like any fictional journalists enough to consider them my favorite.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means helping the public make sense of how issues locally and globally are interconnected and how these affect everyone's lives.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
A simple email containing all essential information is more than fine!
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Just your typical Microsoft Office applications. And Notepad. Anything that allows me to type and erase words back and forth.
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook and Twitter.
Why did you become a journalist?
Journalism is my first love! I first started news writing when I was in elementary (for my school paper) and never looked back since.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes. I began as a writer in sophomore year. I became editor for Filipino a year after, then editor-in-chief during my senior year.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Probably all cover stories and breaking articles I've written so far!
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
More than passion, one needs a fair mix of patience, braveness and luck to survive the industry. Best of luck!
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime between 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays is fine!
What's your favorite drink?
Iced tea for sure! I cannot, for the love of me, refuse it and I can drink pitchers of it if I'm left to my own devices.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Watching a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie/TV show or spending time with my cats.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I like reading CNN Digital along with New York Times and the Washington Post.
