What was your first job as a journalist?

I wrote a column on theatre and documentary cinema for the Mumbai Mirror.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I wish I could use it more often.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To constantly question yourself before others, to write with humility, report with empathy, worry about ethics and fairness, be courageous.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Hashtags are usually funny or unfunny in the way they are used.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Over email or in person.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I record everything- even things said off the record, for my own sake. Other than that I need nothing except Word, of course.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I cannot think of anything more exciting than finding, interpreting and telling stories that shape our world.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I edited my school magazine when I was in high school.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

It is very hard to pick one but if I had to choose I would pick my work as an editor and reporter from Kashmir in 2008 and 2010.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Over-report, fact-check and work with editors you trust.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Absolutely any time.
