South Africa: Let's Not Fool Ourselves - Corruption in the Public Sector Is Theft From the Poor

AFRICAN ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY Money needed to address poverty, inequality and unemployment fills the pockets of those involved in corrupt activities. And, to add insult to injury, they flaunt their ill-gotten gains and spit in the face of the poor. Celebrated annually on 11 July, African Anti-Corruption Day is an opportunity for us to reflect on how corruption hampers efforts to lift millions of Africans out of poverty, provide food, education, jobs and basic services to many across the continent.
South Africa: Corruption, Crime, Rolling Blackouts, Unemployment, Poverty, Inequality - - Anything to Celebrate?
analysis The reality for many South Africans is one of disillusionment as they cannot celebrate their freedom because the political elites have amassed wealth at the expense of the downtrodden majority. In 1994, South Africa emerged from decades of oppressive apartheid rule, marked by racial segregation and discrimination. The transition to democracy was a momentous occasion, symbolising hope and promise for a nation torn apart by racial tensions.

FREEDOM DAY OP-ED The reality for many South Africans is one of disillusionment as they cannot celebrate their freedom because the political elites have amassed wealth at the expense of the downtrodden majority. OPINION | Pregala Pillay and Chris Jones: Corruption perpetuates cycle of poverty
In 1994, South Africans had so much hope. There was so much promise to address poverty, unemployment, and inequality and to establish meaningful and sustainable economic growth. But sadly, 30 years later, we are in a state of melancholy, write Pregala Pillay and Chris Jones. Every year on 17 October, we observe , which can be traced back to 17 October 1987, when more than 100 000 people gathered in Paris to honour victims of extreme poverty, violence, and hunger.
ANALYSIS | Africa Day: Evaluating corruption on the continent and which countries are doing better
In celebrating Africa Day, Chris Jones and Pregala Pillay focus on corruption in Sub-Saharan Africa and what certain well-performing countries are doing right in their fight against the scourge. Africa Day is commemorated annually on 25 May to mark the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, the precursor to the African Union (AU), on this day in 1963. The theme for this year is "Africa – Opportunities in Challenging Times".
The vital role of whistleblowing in achieving good governance
South Africa’s transition from colonial rule to democracy has been marred by several corruption scandals and high crime rates. The National Development Plan 2030 identifies corruption as a significant threat to the rule of law. Corruption curtails the equitable distribution of resources by undermining core democratic principles and impeding social, economic, and political development.
OPINION | Corruption hampers growth and development in Africa
The reason that corruption is endemic to the African continent is because it is rooted in its leadership, argues Pregala Pillay and Chris Jones. African Anti-Corruption Day, which is commemorated annually on 11 July, wants to give prominence to the anti-corruption fight on the continent, marking an important step towards the Africa we want. It would not be farfetched to assume that we all want a prosperous Africa, based on inclusive growth and sustainable development.
