How ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Brings Gender Theory Out Of Academia And Onto TV
On season 8 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” New York queen Peppermint revealed to her fellow competitors and fans that she identified as a trans woman, and began a dialogue on gender often missing from primetime television. The coming-out moment spotlighted that, aside from the camp, wit and glamour we expect from the now-10-season strong VH1 series, RuPaul’s show achieves something incredible for mainstream entertainment.
Martin Luther King Jr. Was One Of The Original 'Black Identity Extremists'
America, especially non-black America, is often quite forgetful when it comes to Martin Luther King Jr. It prefers only to remember the warm, fuzzy parts of his legacy. It recalls perfectly that he was a pastor and spoke of peace above all else. The “I Have A Dream” speech has such a nice, nonthreatening ring to it that once a year, elementary kids recite it like racism ended when the speech did.

How 'RuPaul’s Drag Race' Gave Me Queer Space In A Very Straight Home
In my family, television is the altar upon which relationships are built. And growing up, my mother, older sister and I treated reality competition shows like weekly communions. We were there for that first “American Idol” season. We all truly rooted for Tiffany on “America’s Next Top Model” (after that episode, we quietly went to bed to process our respective heartbreaks). And we honestly fought when my sister watched a new episode of “So You Think You Can Dance” without us.
17 Badass Black Superheroes Everyone Should Know
Black Panther became the first black superhero when Marvel introduced him in 1966, but he was only the beginning. One of the few to outrank Wonder Woman is a literal black queen. Meanwhile, in Harlem, one black man fights corruption and takes bullets while in his signature black hoodie.

Jordan Peele Wears Deer Pin In Tribute To Symbolism In 'Get Out' At Oscars
Jordan Peele paid tribute to his directorial debut “Get Out” in a subtle way at the Oscars. On the red carpet Sunday night, he wore a golden pin shaped like deer antlers — a symbolic motif throughout his film. The deer shows up multiple times in the social thriller as a metaphor for modern-day racism. For example, it’s on the wall of Rose’s (Allison Williams) parents’ home, where she’s just brought her boyfriend, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), for the weekend.
Older Academy Voters Still Haven't Seen 'Get Out' And Don't Plan To
Some older Academy voters apparently think “Get Out,” one of the most profitable movies of 2017 and Best Picture nominee, is not Academy Awards material. In an interview with Vulture, newer academy voters revealed that their older colleagues hadn’t even seen the film. While the 14 newcomers interviewed reflect an extended effort on behalf of the academy to diversify its voters room, the remaining voters are older and have much narrower views on what makes a film worthy of a statuette.
