Tackling age-gap double standard in relationships
Priya Mulji 13 April, 2024 By: Priya Mulji INTERESTING new dance production Mehek revolves around the love story between a mature older woman and a younger man. The taboo-busting show, headlined by world-renowned dancers Aditi Mangaldas and Aakash Odedra, embarks on a UK tour in April, offering plenty of food for thought.
Learning from each other across generations
Priya Mulji 23 March, 2024 By: Priya Mulji AT THE END of January, I took a trip to Amsterdam with my niece. It was her 18th birthday in December and being the cool aunt I am, I wanted to give her a European birthday treat. One thing I learned from her during the trip and told her as much, was that she is so much more selfaware than I was at her age, including on an issue I was having with a friend. That is true for so many young people these days.
New theatre version of My Beautiful Launderette retains its power
Priya Mulji 10 March, 2024 By: Priya Mulji THE enduring power of Hanif Kureishi’s writing was showcased by the successful stage adaptation of his brilliantly written 1985 film, My Beautiful Launderette. Staged in 2019 at The Curve in Leicester, the play proved its continued relevance in contemporary times. A new version of the play returned to the same theatre, ahead of a current national tour.
Embrace solo bliss on Valentine’s Day
Priya Mulji and Asjad Nazir 09 February, 2024 By: Priya Mulji and Asjad Nazir VALENTINE’S DAY is a celebration of love, but for many single people it can be triggering, making them feel sad, left out and lonely. But that doesn’t have to be the case because for those not in a relationship, there are plenty of empowering things to do. With that in mind, Eastern Eye put together a quick list of 21 things to do for those who are single on February 14.
The right partner will celebrate you
Priya Mulji 22 January, 2024 By: Priya Mulji THE recently concluded series of Married At First Sight had plenty of interesting moments. One of the big takeaways from the show was the portrayal of men, who this year, were mostly very down-to-earth, romantic and genuine. And even though some relationships didn’t work out, I’m sure there will be no shortage of women banging at their doors! One thing that really resonated with me was a comment from expert Mel Schilling.

Untitled - Pakistan Weekly
Priya Mulji 30 September, 2023 By: Priya Mulji WITH more British Asian podcasts than ever before, there is a great variety of shows on offer for avid listeners. The popular medium is also giving those who have never thought about broadcasting an avenue to express their opinions to a worldwide audience. With all that in mind, Eastern Eye sought out three quality podcasts worth finding.
Priya Ashra: Search for Mr Right
By: Priya Mulji SURPRISE sleeper hit Indian Matchmaking has become a cultural phenomenon since it had a Netflix premiere in 2020 and led to a Jewish-inspired spin-off. After largely focusing its efforts on America and India, the reality TV show touched down in UK earlier this year and introduced audiences to a new batch of singletons looking for that special someone. A stand-out participant from that third season was Priya Ashra.
‘Do not let yourself be manipulated’
By: Priya Mulji THOSE who have watched the latest series of Married at First Sight will have heard several terms being used. Gaslighting, emotional abuse and manipulation have been the most common, and they all tie in together. Married at First Sight sees couples being paired by experts and only meeting on their wedding day – pretty much like an arranged marriage. Bronte and Harrison, a good-looking couple in their 30s have been at the centre of this touchy subject.
Scourge of explicit photos sent by men
By: Priya Mulji I recently saw a documentary by Emily Atack, titled Asking for It, which dealt with the issue of women who receive unwanted photos. The actress and comedian discussed how she, on a daily basis, received explicit messages and pictures, but this X-rated phenomenon is not just limited to celebrities. They are generally explicit images sent by men to women of themselves with no clothes on or extreme close-ups of their private parts.
The importance of living alone
By: PRIYA MULJI HAVE you seen that social media meme? The one that says, ‘some people don’t understand that sitting alone in your house, in peace, minding your own business, is priceless’. Well, I am currently a walking, talking version of that meme. Why, you might ask? Well, if you follow me on social media, you will see that just before Christmas I bought my first ever home at the age of 40.
Why women should be money-wise
By: Priya Mulji MONEY – a word that is often feared more than the word sex. Whether people have it in abundance, are just geting by or struggling, many shy away from having conversations about finances because it is just really uncomfortable. With everything including food and energy prices continuing to rise, many of us have financial fears. Whether you’re a single person living on your own, have a family or running a business, the cost-of-living crisis will affect us all in 2023.
Shining new light on old practices
By: PRIYA MULJI HER recently published debut novel The Illuminated introduces bright new literary voice Anindita Ghose to readers. The nuanced work of fiction revolves around how the sudden death of influential figure Robi Mallick affects his wife and daughter. Both women battle their respective challenges along with the rising tide of religious fundamentalism in India, while attempting to look at themselves and at each other in a new light.

38 and past my sell-by date - apparently
Disclaimer (because otherwise dudes on Twitter will go mad), I’m not talking about every man here. You know what’s missing, you know where there is a huge gap, when you are looking for stories about women like me. Tales about people like my friend Bina. Like my friend Kirsty. Like my friend Urvashi. Like your friend Kat or cousin Preeti. Your husbands friend Gina or that woman at work, Adina. Stories about women who are single. Single through no fault of their own. They’ve just met men who are assholes.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga - the progressive cinema India needs
***Contains spoilers*** Progressive, subtle, important, moving and emotional are words which I don’t seem to use about Indian films at the moment, but I absolutely have to use these words about the film I saw last night. Now, I’m no film critic, but I love Indian cinema had to share a few words on this film that’s breaking barriers. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (When I saw this girl, this is how I felt) is the story of a girl who loves another girl.
Patri Artisan Street Food and Drinks - review
Closest station – Northfields (Piccadilly line) Standout dish – Paan Patte Ki Chaat Website Twitter Facebook Instagram It’s been a while since I did a restaurant review but when I was invited to check out Patri (part of the Chai Naasto group) I was intrigued and couldn’t give up the chance! Myself and my friends are huge fans of Chai Naasto, especially the Hammersmith branch and Patri is the brain-child of owner of both former and latter, Puneet and his wife.
