Letter: Robinson would bring insight, experience to Iowa House
As a teacher with 38 years in the classroom, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when public schools are forced to do more with less. Budget cuts hurt students, overwhelm educators, and weaken communities. That’s why I’m proudly supporting Matt Robinson for Iowa House District 72 in the June 2 primary election.
50 Cent:" I Won't Live Much Longer
% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents. ‘I’m not going to live much longer’: 50 Cent makes macabre death prediction on Twitter Last updated at 11:11 PM on 4th January 2012 His first album was titled Get Rich or Die Tryin’. But despite meeting his ambition after raking in tens of millions thanks to his highly profitable career, it seems 50 Cent believes he is heading for an early grave.
Opinion: Trump and the natural world
If you hate everything in nature and the outdoors, you must love Donald Trump. In the short time he’s been in office, he’s done his best to sell off public lands, open more public lands to oil and gas drilling, open roadless areas to increased logging, increased air and water pollution, reduced protection for wildlife, and cut several thousand employees from agencies that manage public lands and the environment.
Opinion: The Big Beautiful Bill
It is a beautiful bill for the richest Americans. The richer you are, the more you will benefit. That is, unless you don’t care if the national debt increases. Or you don’t care if climate change accelerates. Or you don’t care about providing health care and food for the poorest Americans. Or if you don’t care about maintaining public schools. Or if you don’t care about maintaining rural hospitals. Or if you don’t care about maintaining the last pristine natural areas on public lands.
Opinion: The federal budget
Most Americans know that our federal spending is a mess. What most of us don’t know is why. Nearly two-thirds of the federal budget is allocated to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, other health services, and interest payments on the national debt. Approximately 1/3 is what’s called discretionary spending, which is basically everything else. The Problem: The federal government is over-spending by about 1/3.
Opinion: Blue states - red states
Abe Lincoln said “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” And that is the problem we are facing in the United States. We have a very divided political system. It has become a political sport to fight the other party regardless of the issue. Political party fighting has become the standard issue, instead of addressing the real problems facing our states, our country, and the world. One of the key factors that contributed to this division is our primary election process.
Opinion: Senator Risch, tell the whole story not just part of it
Senator Risch said we’re having lots of hot weather this summer. What he fails to mention is that climate change is making almost every summer hotter. The number of days at or near 100 degrees Fahrenheit will continue to increase until we dramatically reduce our use of fossil fuels. It will likely be sometime after 2050 before we see major reductions in our use of oil, coal and gas.
Opinion: The hidden costs of climate change
Estimates of the direct costs of climate change in the United States are now averaging over 240 billion per year. Of course, there is a huge amount of yearly variation depending largely on the number and strength of hurricanes, extent of flood damage, drought intensity, and number of large fires. But there are many hidden costs that most of us don’t realize or think about, and these are not accounted for. A good example is the decrease in productivity of animals. Most animals don’t sweat.
We're Asking the Wrong Questions About regreSSHion
By now you have likely heard about the latest OpenSSH security issue ( dubbed regreSSHion, since all good bugs require a catchy name). And as usual, we're seeing many blog posts that just summarize and outline the research done (which, by the way, was amazing), without offering any substantially new advice or thoughts. Frequently, these blogs have nothing more to say than "patch, and if you can't patch, here's the workaround". That's not insightful.
On the Importance of Runtime Security in the Age of OSS Backdoors
It's been a week since the xz backdoor dropped. I stand by my earlier conclusion that the community really dodged a bullet, and this is reaffirmed by many other well-respected voices in the community. Since this incident is likely going to go down in history as a watershed moment in OSS supply chain security (for better or for worse), I've been keeping an eye on different insights into the issue, the state of OSS security, what we can do (as a community) to avoid this in the future.
An Accidental Discovery of a Backdoor Likely Prevented Thousands of Infections
Yesterday's discovery of the xz backdoor was an accident. But what a fortunate accident it was. The actor (or actors, we don't yet know) had been diligent in their efforts for a long time, and only very recently started putting all the pieces together in what ended up being discovered yesterday. The backdoor is incorrectly being called an "ssh backdoor"; this is a bit misleading.
Opinion: Hitler, Putin and Trump
We are at a scary time in America. Public trust in government is at an all-time low. Nearly 90% of Americans think Congress is doing a poor job. The national debt continues to rise, seen as out of control by both political parties and most voters. Climate change is lurking everywhere. Many Americans hope it will simply go away, but it will only get worse. There is a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness by many Americans.
Opinion: The Endangered Species Act - 2023
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) was developed as a concept in the 1960s and finally signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1973. During its first years, ESA did some wonderful things; it made people aware of species, like the bald eagle, that were in danger of extinction from DDT poisoning, which led to reductions in DDT usage. A few other species were slowly added in the 1970s, but then multiple species were added with increasing frequency as time went on.
One CTO's Experience
Another August, another Hacker Summer Camp. The annual gathering of 25,000 like-minded hackers and security enthusiasts descended on Vegas for a week of get togethers, talks, and parties. This year was a bit different for Deepfactor, however. In previous years, we were attendees. This year, Deepfactor was present at BSidesLV with a booth, and at DEF CON as a sponsor of AppSec Village.

Digging Into An Interesting New CVE
CVE-2023-38408, discovered by the Qualys Threat Research Unit (TRU), describes an RCE (remote code execution) vulnerability made possible by an unwanted interaction between OpenSSH's ssh-agent executable, the dlopen() and dlclose() functions used by a process to load shared libraries, and various other deficiencies in libraries present (or installable) in many Linux distributions. Opinion: Climate change: The knowns and the unknowns
By now most Americans admit that climate change is real and that it is accelerating the weird weather events around the world. The knowns are more long-term droughts, more extreme localized rain and snowfall events, more record-breaking hot days, more lightning strikes, more large forest and rangeland fires, increasingly severe hurricanes, tornadoes that are more devastating, and simply warmer worldwide temperatures. But there are still a lot of unknowns.

Opinion: Ranked choice voting - a better system
Dorothy Moon recently had an article saying how bad ranked choice voting (RCV) would be. And she's exactly right in one way: Ranked choice voting tends to eliminate extremists. Most voters want a balanced candidate that is willing to work with any other elected representative in an open effective manner to solve problems for people. Our current voting system tends to encourage the extremism that reinforces our political divide.
Local government - can it change with the times?
Bannock County and the city of Pocatello have had the same basic leadership structure over the last 50-plus years. The county has three elected commissioners that basically attempt to run the county. The city has a full-time mayor and six part-time council members who attempt to run the city.

The Right Angle - SHOCK WAVES - The Clinton County Leader: Opinion
As we recover from the seemingly endless campaigns, vile attacks, specious charges, and out-right lies of the recent election cycle, we realize that we have witnessed an unprecedented revolution in American politics. One might even call it an earthquake! Even the Reagan landslide of 1980 was not as emotionally charged as the Clinton-Trump battle, and the far left did not challenge that result.
D - I’m Deplorable - The Clinton County Leader: Opinion
The Democrat nominee for President, Hillary Rodham Clinton, has just called half of Donald Trump’s supporters, “deplorable”, a basket full of homophobic, misogynists, racists, xenophobic, and ignorant voters. Being in that group, I raced to my Oxford American dictionary to see what “deplorable” meant: “wretched, bad, worthy of severe reproach”, pretty much “unreDeemable” and other adjectives Denigrating good American workers, veterans and patriots without that Ivy League college degree.
Larkin: World War Three continues - The Clinton County Leader: Opinion
After another horrific attack in Paris last Friday, it should be obvious even to our weak and vacillating President that we are and have been in a war with radical Islam since the sixties when Hamas hijacked four International airlines, forced them to land in a desert in Jordan, held our hostages for weeks, then blew up the airliners, including a 707 belonging to TWA.
