Would Jesus Want an Inclusive Church?
Christian love, Diversity and Inclusion, Progressive Christianity By Daniel A. Mora | 18 September 2026 | Michigan’s Coloma Seventh-day Adventist Church recently issued a 248-page document cataloguing what it sees as serious LGBTQIA+ deviations within the North American Division. Its authors hope other churches will follow suit, submit similar requests, and force a response from the NAD.
Why Must I Chase The Cat? A Progressive Sermon On Sin. Why Must I Chase The Cat? A Progressive Sermon On Sin.
It may seem like progressive Christianity doesn’t adequately address the reality of sin – or even that it rejects the notion all together. That isn’t accurate. Progressive Christians do tend to understand sin differently than our conservative Christian friends, but that doesn’t mean we reject or deny sin. I wrote about this matter once before on this blog, posting most of the Chapter on Sin in my book Kissing Fish: Christianity for People Who Don’t Like Christianity.
How the American Church Keeps Getting It Wrong
The word “Christian” carries an entire Samsonite luggage set’s worth of baggage, doesn’t it? I know I’m not the only non-conservative, non-evangelical Christian who has felt the need to explain themselves when a conversation wanders into matters of faith. Hence the title of this column. Not that kind of Christian My goal for this little corner of the internet is to serve as an alternative to what we have allowed to become the primary voice of Christianity over the last thirty to forty years.
Book News: Book Signing and Contract Signing
I have just signed a contract for my next book. After wrapping up two books about John the Baptist, it was nice to not feel any need to hurry to figure out what my next big research and writing project will be. I still haven’t decided where I will focus my academic research in the coming years, although I have some ideas. But I have been eager for some time to write more for a general audience, and there was a subject that I’ve long wanted to write about.
Reflections on #TheologyBeerCamp 2023
I didn’t know what to expect from my first time at Theology Beer Camp. In short, I was blown away by what an impressive model it offered of doing and being church in a manner that is progressive and open. My own talk was about theology in Doctor Who and Star Trek so I dressed for the occasion. There was a whole separate “geek stage” where the programming had this sort of focus.
Reaffiliation? Not So Fast
First, let me say I am not slamming the door on future reaffiliation. The people who left The United Methodist Church closed it. I do not think we should be too quick to reopen it. A fair amount of coverage is being given to the resolution adopted by the Alabama-West Florida Conference. While many see it as a hopeful expression of grace, I think it is too soon. Deep wounds need time to heal. Should we try reconciliation before there has been adequate time?
Seminaries Are Not The Problem
Seminaries Are Not The Problem March 27, 2023 C. Don Jones Seminaries get blame for not training clergy appropriately. The blame comes from a certain segment of society which claims all that higher education does is make good people liberal. The recent approval of two southern Baptist seminaries for training clergy in the Global Methodist Church reflects this prejudice. Most secularists oppose theological education as either programming or indoctrination.
There’s Always a Bigger Out-Group
As I listened to Brian McLaren’s wonderful book Do I Stay Christian? a while back I had lots of thoughts. The book has prompted me to think and reflect not only about the book’s content itself but also related (and at times tangential) matters. One major theme in the book, even if not flagged as such, is shifting from being part of a conservative Christian minority in the context of a liberal secular society, to being a liberal inclusive minority in the context of conservative Christian society.
Divine Rage
Divine Rage February 9, 2023 C. Don Jones Divine Rage? Yes. I am reading Valerie Kaur’s memoir See No Stranger with a group of people from church. It has a nice title. But what got my attention is her chapter “Rage.” We often talk about anger in church. We do not, however, talk about rage. Kaur is a Sikh. Her interest in the topic of divine rage is rooted in her own experience or patriarchal manipulation. She finds her solution in the religious traditions of southern Asia.
Wholehearted Faith
I have loved every single one of Rachel Held Evans’ books. I have never been as moved as I was by listening to the audiobook of her latest and presumably last, the posthumously published Wholehearted Faith. Audiobooks are not all the same. Some are read by the author. Some are read by professional narrators. This audiobook is unique in that it has a different reader for just about every chapter. Who are those readers? Rachel’s friends, and in the case of one chapter, her sister.
“Certainty Is Hubris And Arrogance Masquerading As Discernment”
Ashley Darling wrote something so poignant, insightful, and on-target that I wanted to draw attention to it. Here is an excerpt: Certainty is not what we should seek as Christians. It is comforting but diametrically opposed to faith. Certainty is merely hubris and arrogance masquerading as discernment. One might say that they know the earth is only 6000 years old. Others might say that they know the second coming of Christ will occur this or that way.
Episode 64: Colby Martin - Unclobber
No, that’s not Bryce Harper. It’s Colby Martin. He’s got the best head of hair in Progressive Christianity and we’ve got him to talk about his new book, ‘Unclobber: Rethinking our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality’. Endorsed by Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, and Glennon Doyle Melton, Colby Martin works his way through the ‘clobber’ passages often used to denounce and dehumanize our LGBT brothers and sisters. He talks with the voice of a theologian while using a pastoral tone.
What Is Progressive Christianity?

Picking and Chewing
The conservative Christian approach to Scripture has consistently led to conclusions and stances of which later conservative Christians are ashamed. When will there be an acknowledgment that it is the approach (the root) and not only the conclusions (the fruit) that are the problem? Today in my Sunday school class we continued our discussion of commands that do not make sense to us or seem applicable. Then in the service, the sermon was about what Scripture is and what it is for.
