Taliban regime threatens years of activism by Afghan non-profit arts group
Omaid Sharifi remembers where he was when the Taliban overtook Afghanistan’s capital in August. The co-founder and president of ArtLords, a non-profit arts organization, was with five of his fellow artists painting a mural on the side of the office belonging to the governor of Kabul. The mural was one of the thousands he and ArtLords’ 53 artists have created across Afghanistan since 2014 as a way to beautify a country ravaged by war and conflict. On Sunday, Aug.

South Indian Lake is located roughly 316 kilometres northwest of Thompson, Man.
The Muslim family killed in London, Ont. could have been mine
If you’ve ever driven through Canadian suburbs in the evening, chances are you’ve seen older adults in turbans strolling sidewalks or women in loose, colourful pants and scarves draped around their heads rocking the comfiest sneakers in the park. Going on walks is a therapeutic act, especially for those who are older. People like my parents or grandparents cannot just go to the gym due to accessibility issues.
Broadview brings home 28 awards
Broadview was honoured with numerous awards at two different ceremonies this week. Among the wins were 17 prizes at the Canadian Christian Communicators Association (CCCA) Awards, including the A.C. Forrest Memorial Award for excellence in socially conscious religious journalism Wednesday night. Each year, the CCCA hands out awards for the highest-quality examples of writing and reporting in the community.
Self-care for media workers facing layoffs
We asked psychologists, a lawyer and a career coach to share their self-care tips for coping with job loss and navigating next steps Let’s get this out of the way: Getting laid off sucks. It upends your life. It adds a financial strain you never signed up for. It drains you both mentally and physically. But losing your job during a global health pandemic? That can topple whatever fragile semblance of balance you’ve cobbled together over the last year.
British Airways' Indian Ocean Ad Couldn't Have Come At A Worse Time (PHOTO)
British Airways is drawing criticism from travellers over the poor timing of one of its ads. The image in question features clear blue waters with text asking travellers to "escape the commute and discover the Indian Ocean". Users on Reddit were quick to upload images the ad, suggesting the ad's run time was too soon given the recent developments over missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
Former PM John Turner's Most Interesting Stories Didn't Come While In Office
If you don’t remember John Turner’s time as prime minister, that’s probably because it lasted 79 days. Despite his short stint at the top of Canadian politics, Turner managed to accumulate a few stories worth sharing. After all, you don’t devote a third of your life to politics as a MP, cabinet minister of multiple portfolios, leader of the Opposition, and yes — prime minister, without turning a few heads.
Great Christmas Gift Ideas For Men And Women Always Travelling
Christmas shopping for the constant traveller is not always an easy task. After all, what do you get someone who's always on the go? Well, as glamorous as the idea of 24/7 globe-trotting sounds, the reality is less than picture-perfect. Between the jet-lag they’ll face with during those double-digit hour-long flights or fighting for some peace and quiet on that jam-packed bus, there are some downsides to a typically awesome lifestyle.
Concerned Teachers Are Sharing What Classrooms Look Like In The Pandemic
A school year with the COVID-19 pandemic as a backdrop is right around the corner and teachers are showing what classrooms now look like on social media. The photos highlight the struggles instructors are facing as they balance pre-pandemic class sizes (which can be upwards of 25 kids) with social distancing measures. Hey @sflecce & @fordnation I fit 24 desks w/ 1m spacing! No room for a teacher desk, learning centre, library, quiet table, smartboard, art centre but we can manage. The problem?
How You Can Help The People Of Beirut Right Now
As the people of Beirut grapple with the fallout from two deadly blasts Tuesday, Canadians thousands of miles away might be wondering what they can do to help. Canada’s Lebanese community is mobilizing to raise donations, specifically for the Lebanese Red Cross. The non-governmental organization is the main provider of ambulances in the country and its network for first-responders are mostly volunteers.

Separated By The Pandemic, This Couple Got Married At The Canada-U.S. Border
What started as a joke turned out as the fix to unite two American and Canadian families. Kadee Jensen was set to marry her partner Jaxson Jensen in June but, like many couples, the COVID-19 pandemic put their wedding on an indefinite hold. Complicating things was that Kadee’s family lived in Montana while her in-laws lived in Alberta. All non-essential travel between the Canada-U.S. border has been shut down since March 21, and officials recently extended the closure until Aug. 21.

Netherlands' Liberation Day Tributes To Canadians Persist Despite COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic may have tempered a milestone chapter in Dutch-Canadian relationships, but it couldn’t trample over tradition. May 5th marks Liberation Day in the Netherlands. The celebration commemorates the day allied forces, including Canadian soldiers, liberated the Dutch from Nazi occupation in 1945.

Since then, the Dutch have always taken the day to show their gratitude to Canadians through parades and fanfare. That was until the coronavirus crisis put mass gatherings on hold.

Places Of Worship Adopt Creative Solutions To Keep Faith During COVID-19
If there was a light at the end of this COVID-19 pandemic tunnel, it would likely be due to some premiers unveiling plans this week to reopen their provinces. But as some businesses get the green light to open back up, churches, mosques, temples and synagogues remain in the dark. Without a firm date on when it’ll be safe to return, some institutions have had to get creative. Check out the video above to see how some places of worship have adapted to stay connected with congregants.

Vintage World War Posters Get Updated For The Coronavirus Crisis
It’s not quite World War III, but the global fight against COVID-19 is certainly one for the history books. Over the course of the past several weeks, Canadians have been asked to wash their hands, don cloth face masks and practice social distancing all in the name of slowing the spread of the novel coronavirus. And like any good call to action, the best way to spread the word is through art. Some like Sarnia, Ont.
Watch How Canadians Answer The Call To Mourn N.S. Victims With Red
The death of RCMP Const. Heidi Stevenson marks the first time in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s 147-year history that a fallen officer will not get a regimental funeral. The 23-year veteran of the force was one of 22 known victims killed in what is now Canada’s worst mass shooting. Regimental funerals usually see mourners and other members of law enforcement gather in large groups, but social distancing measures in place to slow the spread of COVID-19 made traditional proceedings unrealistic.

At-Home Haircuts During Coronavirus Show How Far People Are Willing To Go
Working from home, entertaining kids without school or daycare and long lineups at grocery stores remain the exhaustive norm as society grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic. And if there’s one thing people are clearly fed up with, it’s their outgrown hair. At least that’s what hashtags like #Coronaviruscuts, #quarantinehaircuts and #diyhaircuts would suggest.
