What was your first job as a journalist?
Summer intern for the New Orleans Times-Picayune sports department.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, of course. Then again, I'm prematurely obsolete.
How is social media changing news?
It makes news seem to come more rapidly, but with fewer filters, both good and bad.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
No journalist should be fictional.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means I write for a living.

I'm still not sure what a hashtag is.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
A slow pitch right down the middle of the plate.

Hard work.

Donald Trump, so he would have conniption fits about what I write.
Why did you become a journalist?
I like writing, I care about facts, and I want to contribute to the public conversation.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes, I served in several editorial capacities for it.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My two years of detailed coverage in 1990-91 of the then-ascendant career of David Duke. I helped expose his continuing Nazi ties.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Put facts and context first.

Mid-to-late morning

ANY pitch that had facts and documentation already arranged in a concise, understandable package.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I don't remember bad pitches.
What's your favorite drink?
A really good red wine.

Playing or watching sports.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That if we are opinion journalists, facts don't really matter.
