Wave spectrum break in an Alfvén wave driven solar wind
Several turbulent spectrum measurements of the interplanetary medium, e.g., from the missions Mariner, Pioneer, Voyager, etc., show a spectral break. Jatenco-Pereira & Opher (1989a, MNRAS, 236, 1; 1989b, A&A, 209, 327; 1989c, ApJ, 344, 513) studied Alfvén wave driven winds in young and old stars and the Sun. We study the wave flux evolution in the model of JPO using surface wave damping.
Alfven waves in the formation of quasar clouds
The problem of the formation of broad line emittingclouds (BLEC) in quasars has not been resolved. The difficulty is that the BLEC is near the centralengine of the quasar which is an intense source ofradiation. The ambient region is at a temperatureof ~ 10⁸ K, while the BLEC is at a temperature~ 10⁴ K. We suggest that the BLEC are formed bya thermal instability in the presence of Alfvén waveheating.
The momentum problem in wolf-rayet stars
One of the more promising acceleration mechanisms suggested involves the driving of the mass loss by an outward-directed flux of Alvén waves. Hot and massive O, B and Wolf-Rayet stars are the source of very strong stellar winds. In general, radiation pressure on the gas has been suggested for driving these winds. Radiation pressure- models, however, have difficulty in explaining several observational characteristics of these stars.
