Have Your Say: Letters to the Editor April 2024
STAR LETTER - Digital certificates and charges (copy of letter sent to ABRSM) I think it is preposterous for an organisation of ABRSM's standing to deny an automatic, quality certificate to students paying considerable sums to sit their exams. In your email, you say it is to ‘maintain standards’ and is more ‘secure’. In what way? How can watermarked quality paper be faked more easily than pathetic black-and-white pages produced on a home printer?
Is the Biden Administration doing enough to combat climate change?
“It’s not a plan that tinkers around the edges,” said President Joe Biden at a speech in Pittsburgh this past March. “It’s a once-in-a generation investment in America, unlike anything we’ve seen or done since we built the Interstate Highway System and the Space Race decades ago.” In his 2020 campaign promises, Biden said that he would get the United States to be carbon neutral by 2050. That’s not an ambitious goal—it’s something we’ve needed to do for a really long time.
The Tokyo Olympics should not have happened
Protestors demonstrate against the Tokyo Olympics near the National Stadium in Tokyo, Friday, July 23. Kantaro Komiya/AP Images “What do we want?” shouted Satoko Itani at a protest in Tokyo on July 23rd. “Cancel the Olympics!” the crowd of protesters yelled back. To say that the 2021 Summer Olympics Games are controversial would be an understatement.
Dear Billionaires, We Already Have a Planet
I want to be funny about this so badly. There are so many jokes to make about this situation, from Jeff Beezus’s silly cowboy hat to his—and I cannot express this enough—incredibly phallic spacecraft design. I want to be funny about this so badly, but I can’t. Billionaires should not be going into space. They should be helping the planet that exists down here. How hard is it to understand that?
Vaccines for the rich, crumbling infrastructure for the poor
When it comes to issues that breach the world internationally, it is so easy to create the narrative that someone is at fault for everything. By reading statistics and gathering information from several sources, the desire to compile data into a story that points fingers or sticks to a hegemonic value becomes second nature. However, these narratives aren’t always true.
Portland’s heatwave is a consequence of climate change
Over the past week, Portland, Oregon has seen summer like never before. Both the unprecedented heat and a sudden urge to spend time inside are strange for a city that’s known for its proximity to the outdoors. This heat wave has challenged Portland’s nature and its spirit. The truth is, summer here isn’t supposed to be like this. It’s supposed to be mild temperatures, not 112°F of sweltering heat. It’s days at the river, not attempts to boil an egg on the pavement.
No police officer is above the law
After a year of screaming “A-C-A-B” and demanding police reformation, Portland seems to be moving in a progressive direction. However, as cliche as it is, the saying goes that everything may not be what it seems. In what bureau officials call an “unprecedented decision,” according to OPB, all 50 members of Portland’s Rapid Response Team have resigned from their positions on the team.
Don’t fall for corporate rainbow-washing this June
We’ve seen it before. We’ve seen companies take advantage of events and cultural progressions as a means to make money—your money. During Pride Month, which spans the entire month of June, businesses act no different. It seems as if every single building, every single company and every single store has some sort of rainbow memorabilia thrown on their window right now. It’s as if on June 1, companies know that they must have something bright and colorful up or else they’re doomed.

May 26: Multnomah County moves to “low risk” COVID-19 restrictions Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced on Thursday that Multnomah County and five other Oregon counties were approved for low-risk COVID-19 restrictions. The lower restriction level allows for a maximum of 50% capacity in indoor locations such as restaurants and gyms, as well as 75% capacity in retail stores.
PPB and US DOJ discuss noncompliance regarding use of force protocol
In response to one of the most eventful summers in Portland’s history, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) reflected on Portland Police Bureau’s (PPB) response to protests, challenging its protocols. Earlier this year, the DOJ sent a formal letter to the City of Portland outlining violations against a 2014 agreement, according to OPB. The letter notes evidence of PPB’s noncompliance with DOJ protocol for use of force. The agreement came about in a 2012 court case, United States v.

Many ASPSU candidates run unopposed, several seats are left vacant
In the most recent Associated Students of Portland State (ASPSU) elections, most candidates ran unopposed and several seats were left empty. “The election was uncontested within ASPSU ranks and within the student body,” said Director of Student Life James Peterson.

Amid pandemic, SHAC helps students manage stress
As the pandemic continues to affect the Portland State community, the Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is offering an event called “Managing Emotions” to help students. The goal of this event is to “validate the difficulties the past academic year has been for students while also providing resources about how to manage and cope with these difficulties,” said Amanda Ramirez, SHAC psychologist and outreach coordinator.
PSU reduces mandatory student fees for Spring 21 term
In a University Communications email released on April 2, Portland State announced it will be reducing mandatory student fees by $39. This cut in fees is due to a lack of student presence on campus as the pandemic continues to take a toll on student life and on campus activities. The cuts are broken down by a 50% decrease in the student building fee, making it $19, and a reduction in the incidental fee to $20.
Over the course of their 31-year career, Radiohead have constructed, intentionally or not, a dense and intricate mythology for devotees to obsess over. In many ways, the band strikes the same cultural nerve as shows like LOST. Fans have spent many blog entries and message-board posts constructing theories as to whether a hidden booklet in the jewel case of Kid A predicts 9/11, or whether OK Computer and In Rainbows are meant to interlock together to form one massive binary-code concept album.
